| Cheers xtr...but I do get a bit pi..ed off with some of the things going on in this country specially when local businesses are forced to follow the lead of these highly questionable producers, be they other kiwi companies or offshore producers...I once took a look into par-baked goods, Ggggezzuzz! there are some bl...dy questionable manufacturers and manufacturing plants, particularlly in the Manukau control area. Run down plant, aluminium dishes breaking down, pretty alarming working conditions and the mistaken belief that because something is even part baked, any bugs will be killed is enough to make a maggot gag.... |

Going back a page here, mearhoo there is a difference between an industrialised economy and industrial machinery.
I would like to put my two cents in on the nuclear debate. There is not much waste to deal with, presently I believe about 10 cubic metres for all the power plants in the world producing waste to date. Think about what xtr... said about toxic waste dumps all over the place. Secondly you need enriched fuel and a delivery system to enable a nuclear explosion so impossible for the dump to go critical.
Nuclear power is the most greenest option for our energy needs at the moment Does not pollute, takes up very small amount of space to produce power think about how much land (sometimes productive land) has to be flooded for hydro and we have a finite number of rivers capable of producing large amounts of power. And it does not produce a large amount of waste.
Lastly it does solve the transmission lines problem. Power hungery Auckland can have its power supply right on its doorstep. This will also solve a problem restraing NZ from industralising. |

| Thanks danforbes. In a perfect world the wind will always blow, the snows will always melt into the rivers, the coal, oil and gas will be there forever. But we do not live in a perfect world, we live in one where the snows are disappearing, river levels are decreasing, oil and gas is running out and coal has become an environmental no no. We also live in a world where even the present resources are not available to many many countries. |

dan it doesn;t seem to ahve stopped people flocking to France...selective media coverage do you think?
Anyway I would support pursuing alternate energy technologies and NUclear ewill always be there as a last resort. Putting mile sof line along the countryside? what part of dumb do these guys not get. Ciorporates eh? at least tehy don;t change theri spots like those darn politicians! |

I just read through this thread and there are some really interesting opinions, about nuclear generation, around. Some really fascinating info, I recently learned, is the ratio of thermal energy between uranium and coal.
One kilo of uranium = Three million kilos of coal.
The power generation in the U.S. is 60% coal-fired!
The amount of nuclear waste produced per person over the average life span is about one cup full.
Nuclear Power is the greenest, cleanest fuel around and I think it's hilarious cos the tree-huggers and greenpeas can't argue the facts on it! |

| Putionz, if you mean France having and utilising nuclear technology hasn't stopped people flocking, I agree whole heartedly. It is the largest tourist destination in the world and one of the favourite countries for refugees. Most people do not seem to be scared of it. |

| I'm neutral over nuclear power, while two full-capacity nuclear can power 1.5 times the population of New Zealander so that'll solve the power crisis but radioactive waste can't be stored in an environmentally friendly way, and close naked contact of the waste can cause deadly mutations and death, I will only go pro-nuclear if the waste can be recycled, stored in a proper manner or scientifically altered into uranium again. |

| Yeah Noozie the figures speak for themselves. I mean 4 cubic meters of waste on a planet this size is just not a problem really. |

| It's not the amount of waste, it's the radiation emitting from it that's a concern. |

Exactly, Dan. There has been so much scare-mongering over nuclear it is ridiculous. It provides the solution to energy problems, if the public can get over the fear of it. The only significant accidents came out of the USSR and that was because of political ladder climbing. It's time we as kiwis stop trying to lead some idealistic world reform and just went with the flow!
(I'm expecting to catch some hell for this, so bring it on!) |

| Exactly Nooz, compare the outcome of Three Mile Island to Chernobyl. Best to buy American I guess. And I do not think the Americans have had an accident since Three Mile Island which was successfully contained. Have they? |

| No, never heard any reports about any more American mishaps and those type reports would be impossible to miss with the hysteria surrounding Nuclear. I've heard the Germans have developed a fail-safe reactor. That'd be the one I'd buy. |

| Yeah that was their policy back in the sixties and seventies. A threat to scare Russia, you can be assured if you try a first strike scenario you can be assured of destruction too. Certainly had the weapons to follow through with the threat. |
