| 2 simple issues - (1)greater population or (2) increase the wealth value of the country - both have to be sustainable. Increasing pop. is the easy no brainer solution. But if not undertaken correctly, the pill that will kill NZ as a country. All plans need to consider the facts. NZ's land area is small and the infra structure poor. Increased pop. will undermine the quality of NZ. Pop. increase should include rules that improve the econo. Not just open the welfare doors and cross fingers it works. Thats UN better for the world's under-priviledged orientated, get me a seat on the UN type of thinking from a PM. Rules such as assets must remain in NZ and citizenship only after 5 years working here with an established asset base. The reality is, the world loves NZ for its many qualities not found offshore. That is the asset that needs to be kept. Increased pop. will destroy it. A country that was NZ as we knew promoted as exclusive and unique like Swizterland, with high cost entry requirements to make it exclusive to the world will lift the value and quality. More poor low socio economic immigrants will reverse that possibility. Now food prices and on the uphill trend and oil is so valuable. Exploration and food economic drivers should be implemented and should have been done so years ago. Increased pop. will not increase country value or wealth because the present policy sees immigrants either create value and send it home or rely on welfare. |

"She'l be alright mateys" just add a few more suburbs to Auclands spreding over populous lands & they can thrive there, can't they ? Is'nt Auckland the only part of NZ!

| hmmmmmmm 8million people, thats alot of people. wat iv learnt in life is that more doesnt necessarily seem 2b the best bet, our numbers hv ben growin an growin, an yet we still seem 2fall were its important. so no we shouldnt grow that big cos then we'd hv,the more people that we would hv worry about, which wuld leed2more crims,that lead 2more taxpaying holidays n the taxpayed4 prisons. dam, we got ova 4mill an we still cant get things right, infact we only getting worst, well thats wat i think. the rich and the govment get richer an the rest of us hv 2hold on till mayb one day we will get sum1 in parliment we can actually trust 2make true people/econemy helping decisions.adding more people 2the problem(2try an help the problem) will probly worsen the other situations this beautiful country of ours has.lets jus hold off 4 awhile while we sort out the crap the 4million people here already hav b4 we add another 4million people, yeah? |

| yes grow. here in australia the govt gives you $5000.00 to have children. we are returning to NZ later this year. thats another 3 to the population. more the better. less chance of govt getting teir way. |

Yes we need to grow the population in order to drive the
internal economic growth. Added population would create
more competition and this would not only give us more choices but better pricing.
Who ever thought we would be paying $5.00 for a 1/2 Kg of
butter? Food prices are now spinning out of control. Most super market chains are controlled by off shore corporations. In the U.S., food chains work off of a margin of 2 1/2 to 3 percent. It seems in N.Z. they work to approximately 20%. Plus on export items we have no choice, we either pay the export price or it is shipped overseas.
Wages are low so many of the younger people are leaving our shore for better jobs, more money, less government control and lower taxes.
Get ready for power cuts, along with rolling brown outs and higher cost for something that will be rationed.
The government of today has done little to promote Solar or alternative power for the country. Consents for Solar Heating alone are costing hundreds of dollars. ( ? )
We are so green, we do not burn our own coal. We ship it to China and all the ash and gases still get into the
atmosphere. So why not just burn it here???
The dairy farmers are polluting all the rivers and streams via the run offs when it rains. What do we get? Dirty rivers that are now so polluted the fish can barely survive. What is the government doing? Sitting on their hands while the dairy industry rips the good citizens off and gets rich. They should be paying some sort of tax to have these rivers and streams cleaned up.
The list goes on.......................

| Yes, NZ needs more people to grow but we don't need so many so soon as a lot of the growth we currently need is to service the extra population growth. New Zealand is only clean and green because there aren't many people here. Double the population and you double the problems, not the solutions. |

great stuff, it has occured to me that haven had 3 children and 1 adopted , that i have made a mistake- dont get me rong i couldnt be with out them ,however as a 38 yr old i fear for there future, globaly we are at crisis point, over pop, under resourced corrupt,is it gonna change , so very ugly, nz is replacing our only chance with canon fodda {mass exidis 4 rong incomis} and while these pathetic politicians run a disfunctional group of overpayed and totaly underqualified group so called govt, we are in the poo,nz should be a bread basket of everything we need and 50 times over whilst mantainen a clean stream full of healthy aquatic life, diversity is the key and dear i say it as much as possible organics.
fellow nz's we are sitting on a massive resivior of the purest oil on the globe and we've been held to ransom by the round table, bite the bullet and lets at least produce our own feul. |

| I agree with your comments, if anybody wants to live in a populated country go and live there. what do foreiners love about N.Z.?, its the lack of population. Lets keep it that way. a huge NO to immigration. ASK the kiwi's that are born in N.Z and do not live in auckland what they want.i bet its is a completly different answer to what those living in already overpopulated auckland want.for those who have not travelled and are saying yes to immigration, get overseas and see how stuffed up the rest of the overpopulated world is, it might make you appreciate what we have and want to safeguard new zealand. NO to immigration. |

| Yes, as a true blue born and educated New Zealander I wouldn't like to see our population increased to 8 million. After living in central Sydney for just on a year who in their right mind wants to live like a sardine in a tin and put up with the crime, filthy streets and the begging that will eventually happen because there won't be enough jobs and welfare will be beyond the average citizen. And the way we are going at the moment it won't be long before we, of a certain ethnicity, will be as rare as hen's teeth?? Australia has realised that, Sydney's population is more asian than anything else at the moment. I like my oasis beyond the Bombay Hills and hopefully I won't have to leave it or share it with too many immigrants. They are welcome to visit but if they want to stay bring a skill or business that is viable. |

I agree we should look at open ended agreements with the US,my concern is that China has their 100 year plan and the way I see it, they are working it well.If the Chinesse decided it was time to pull the plug on the US it could.A couple of months ago there was speculation this was about to happen and the US economy is still reeling from the speculation.I dont think the agreement with China is a bad thing as it will create further wealth for both sides but we need to make sure the NZ economy is not manipulated by the Chinesse way of doing business(cheap and nasty products from some factories)--which could also cause ecological damage.
The authorities will need to keep a watchful eye on proceedings and not be afraid to speak up if things arent going according to our economic plan. |

8 million people will form a larger market base for manufacturing, servicing and sharing of costs such as Rates etc.
Increase the number of suitable immigrants who must beable to accept certain jobs & investments as directed. |

Bring on the nuclear power it is something that is holding us back way to many greens are narrow minded and cant look at the big picture!!!
Growing the population is defiantly required and the country's infrastructure will also need to be improved but that will come with the increase of population. |
