i dont think so everyone i know who visits from overseas loves NZ for the way it is infact the way they were years ago if you want to live in a city go live in The USA, England or Australia, think of all the stress this would put on our infrastructure and the increasing crime rates we would face similar to growth in other countries. you think you pay enough tax now this would only require more of your money to build roads etc. Think about it
However Im sure one day we will end up there |

I dont know wht they mean by right migrants - currently they pay full taxes, work long hours in jobs which locals are too ashamed or unwilling to do, yet most dont qualify for scholarships, free medical help, no dole, or special privileges. One should be thankful they are around or this island economy would have collapsed by now or taken over by Aus, just like all the big companies already have been... |

Great idea, but no point in filling up the bucket from the top if you have a leak from the bottom.
People come here for lifestyle, not for money generally and if we remain a low wage economy, we will keep losing good quality people across the Tasman and further afield.There are few Industries in NZ which offer the same financial rewards and occupational benefits that you get elsewhere. Young people with families tend to look at the money. We know they mostly come back, but that is usually after they have passed their peak in economic usefulness. |

Let's not kid ourselves that we are Green either. I love living here, but not for the greeness of the country. None of my Kiwi neighbours recycle apart from glass. We are the only house in the area with solar panels. If our govt was serious about conservation every new house would be double glazed and have solar heating. It would dramatically reduce the cost and you open a whole new industry for skilled people here or for migrants coming in.
We allow gas guzzling Utes and other monstrosities on our roads and fail to charge them for the greater pollution they cause simply by using more fuel per kilometre.
I am not a tree hugger by any stretch of the imagination, but dont pretend that NZ is green |

| No No No.... We have a good population now. We also have many social problems that are causing destructive behaviours as it is. We have huge domestic violence and child abuse issues. Why would we want to increase our population when we can't even deal with the ongoing problems that we have now??? |

| the reason NZ is so sought after is because there is ONLY 4 million people here, why would we want 8-10 million people here, we are the a.s.s.h.o.l.e end of nowhere! what other than tourism do we have to offer the world, pretty much nothing. what would that many people do? the only thing that i can see happening with 8 million people would be a third world manufacturing sweatshop rivalling india and china. England has 50million people but they are a financial hub of the world, not NZ. No leave it as is and in 50 yrs we will be glad of the fact that we are not overrun, look at auckland now, 1 million people and its madness up there, is that what we want to plan for??? |

| gavinbeath - great line about the test batsman but I hate to burst eveyones bubble but this issue is not an economical one. It's a political one. Helen Clark's plan is simply to make the Labour party the natural government of NZ. So by bringing in a load of migrants that will vote for her party she ensures labour remains in power, indefinitely. This is why the benefit net has been widened and we have a low wage economy. The Labour party is simply trying to create a nation of people dependent on the government for their wellbeing and can't make it without a handout in return for a vote. A load of working class Chinese will accomodate this plan and fortunately for Labour NZ already has a good base of citizens who are happy for the govt. to make all their decisions for them. Then she'll be off to the UN to F*^K that up even more than it is now - if that's possible she'll be the one capable of doing it. All the comments re the current ifrastructure unable to cope at present are correct. And rsmith the problem is that ALL we've had over the last 20 years is planning. What NZ needs now more than evedr is DOING.The New Zealand of your parents generation has gone -get used to it and welcome to the future. But I tell you one thing - in our travels of the last 2 years or so most people salivate at the chance of coming to live here so getting migrants won't be an issue. The quality of course will be. So my answer is NO we don't need another 4 million more people not until we get rid of the 65 or so that are stuffing up the country. |

| amen to that. My only issue is if we are going to grow the pop to 8 million, then lets spread them around the country. At the moment all new immigrants are staying in the cities cos thats where the jobs are at. Soon places like Te Teko will be the next "papamoa" resorts! I live in Auckland, and the changes that have occured in and around the central area has not been a positive one. For example, Balmoral, use to be a good working class family suburb, now it looks like China. Sandringham use to be the same, now it looks like Little India, and the Stoddard Road shops, looks like Iraq. So, my question is, while we seem to accommodate for these other cultures, what are we getting back in return? cos I've forgotten. |
