You sounds like you've got a lovely family mate, as I do... We are lucky. Yip, two marriages me as well..Last one really broke the heart and bank.. I'm having to start all over again...And as you keep reminding me of my friggin' age, it's a hard road to re-pave. Still finding my feet as it were. Anyway, this aint the place to be pouring my sorry heart out in.. If we catch up we will talk of stuff not remotely related to race, land or ......shi.t
Cheers

| Keep it in Maaori kindys and schools only. That way those that feel the need to learn it are happy. Mainstream don't send their kids to school for that purpose!! |

| I think there should be courses at schools but not compulsory. It's important for maori but is not really pakeha culture. |

| Totally agree 58, we would be no better than the assimilators we've left behind if Maori forced the issue, I would be against it but would certainly embrace those who wish to learn it. |

Nicely put Ripeka....My sentiments exactly. A compulsory aspect would only serve to bring dissent. AND we don't need that.
Leave Tikanga Maori as it is already in main stream....as an option

| It is a fanciful myth that Te Reo Maori was universally banned in all schools and that all Maori children were punished for speaking it in the early days of colonisation. There may have been instances of it but it was NOT education policy to ban it. There were Maori schools for God's sake and they weren't banned from using the language. It is just a tall tale to make the paheha feel shame for being so nasty to the poor Maori people. In the early days the Maori people preferred to learn English because they could see the benefits that could be gained, they weren't stupid. IT DIDN'T HAPPEN. |

Te Reo Maori is already COMPULSORY in schools people.
As of 2010, Te Reo Maori will be taught to your child/children regardless of ethnicity, race etc etc.
The curriculum document for Te Reo Maori has already been issued to mainstreams schools earlier this year.
The new term now is "Te Reo me ona tikanga Integration".
By no means does it suggest "domination" or "indoctrination" or "dissention". |

Hey, lets tell the ABs to drop the haka too and we'll do some mandarin dance before a test!
Moari should be optional at school. |

gaaard jmatangi what a dork. It wont be long and they'll be taking over Aotearoa and assimilating you. They already have a presence in parliament and local councils that's growing like a rash and your wish old boy will come true. Kia tupato, be carefull what you ask for!!! Better the devil you know than the devil you dont.
In saying that Maori should definitely be optional. |

Right Jim and if they got caned for being disobedient so did everyone then. Shame ..well perhaps adding to claims...?
Should be optional though a basic intro would be fine for everyone |

| In my opinion, Maori should be a compulsory part of the New Zealand curriculum. Maori is the native language of New Zealand whether people like it or not, which I think we should embrace. people may think that making te reo maori compulsory in schools would not be beneficial to students as the language is only spoken by a small percentage of the new Zealand population, but it is still our 2nd official language. I have travelled and lived in many countries around the world, all of which seem to take pride in their national languages, even if only a small percentage of the country can speak it. Take Ireland for instance, their two official languages are English and Irish-Gaeilic. Although only a small percentage of the irish’s native tongue is gaelic, the language is greatly respected by all, and compulsory in their curriculum. The irish are proud of their national languge, and wish to revive the languge after the years of it being surpressed. We should do the same. Maori should not be a dying language, we should embrace and preserve our new zealand culture. |

| "The Maori Language Act 1987 legitimated te reo maori as one of the official languages of New Zealand" Its called symbolism, they made it official but didnt want to spend any money on it. More than likely it was done to shut the Maori up, if I remember rightly back in New Zealand about 1987 the Maoris were making a lot of noise and I would have said anything to shut them up. I just needed some piece and quite. |

rangimarie and hine both make good points. I think it should be compulsory. Learning something does not prevent us from learning something else and if all NZers spoke Te Reo Maori it's use would not be restricted to Aotearoa but infact anywhere you find kiwi's in the world. i for one would love to be able to have a distiction in cultural difference from any other place on earth and be able to talk with my fellow countrymen in a language only we understand. I'd like to be able to say something to a rude frenchmen in retort to an insulting snipe made in french that was never intended to be understood on anything but a body language level, especially something he wouldn't understand.
I think it would enhance us as a country and go further to creating equality in all things. |

| How ignorant are some of those comments below? In my opinion, many of you do not want Maori to be compulsory because you are stuck in that way of thinking that English is the Be all and End all of the languages in the World. Maori is the Indigenous language of New Zealand and an official one. Just because Maori is not spoken outside of this country does not make it any less important than English. It should be a compulsory language in schools and the only reason why it isnt, is because those who are in power have developed these rules and restrictions around the language. Maori have every right to have their language compulsory as they are the indigenous people of their country.Unfortunately even some Maori do not see the importance of their language and do not consider it as important as English. It is their basic human right to have their language in their country! And I think every indigenous language should be compulsory in every country. |

SadSackForay...
Who the whuk is force feeding Te Reo on you???? No one is placing anything compulsory on you. Te Reo is part and parcel of this whenua, therefore it is here to stay. Adopt it or ignore...I don't care. Love your Spa.nish language and power to you, but don't speak *** e!!!!
Maori is not a compulsory subject in any learning institution that I know of unless it is one that adopts a Maori pedagogy. It is an option!!!!!
Gaaaaarrrd!!!! What next???!!! |

| Boy you really have created some healthy (and not so healthy) debate on the issue. I agree with you if only for the reason that "everybody" learn how to pronounce Maori words properly. The majority of our place names, native trees and birds etc are maori - so as a "New Zealander", native or not, you owe it to yourself to pronounce these properly. What if someone pronounced your "English" name wrong? It only needs to be a 1/2 to 1hr lesson, once a week (or even less). Kia kaha! |
