Hi all, i think if Maori were respected by non maori , then maori language in schools wouldnt be such a problem, but because some Maori want everything for nothing, over things which happened years ago ,tends to offend losts of New Zealanders and send out the wrong signal. there is more to this than just the language, and we all know it. It really is a beautiful language and as New Zealanders we should all know some of it, but when were so obviously being segregated for example the recent suggestion of maori automatically qualifying for university when non maori are still expected to reach certain criteria is unacceptable and really puts you off being part of that culture??

For a start Rosey, Maori do NOT wany everything for nothing..Only what was stolen and unscrupulously taken for no other reason than bloody minded Westminster greed.

My culture and language ARE beautiful things and whether you wish to embrace it or not, for whatever reason, one thing is for certain.......segregation was forced on us, NOT adopted by us!!!!! Maori are now starting to enjoy an equal footing in their own land. Hallelujah!!!!!

What a wast eo ftime learning Maori compularily woudl be.
It only has 400 words, English has 40,000 ! French 30,000. It was not written.
I say just keep it as a ceremonial language for Marae's etc and get Maori children learning how to speak English properly ,which half of them can't they are an embarrassment to NZ.
Just watch any doco on Africa etc and those people speak English or French very clearly and precisely.

Were you born here? if not then, get a life. I was born here and am part Maori and proud of the fact. The only thing you can be proud of is a BIG mouth.

I dont have a problem with this at all. Great for kids to learn 2 languages while they are young and their brains are sponges. Why shouldnt one of those languages be maori? Does it matter what the 2nd language is? So why shouldnt it be our 2 official languages

Maori should not be taught in public schools just like religion. That should be a extra subject if the student wants to learn it. What and where is maori going to get any body if they live over seas. and whats up with maori schools and day cares do they get taught ENGLISH?, all a load of hogg wash to me

What's up my nose???!!! You are!!

Maori is more than just about being a native NZ'er StretchyTit. It's about kawai whakapapa. If you can claim kawai whakapapa and still feel ashamed about who you are then that's your problem..

Don't drag those of us who stand proud down to your subterranean level..

Shame be yours!!!!!

Kaki whero!!!!

Why would you waste your time learning a dead end language unless you were planing to spend sometime in Paremoremo or Mt Eden. You would be better off with German, French or Russian if you would like to broaden your employment opportunities and knowledge. It's just common sense really but if you are on benefits and your life is totally meaningless, by all means waste your time with Te Reo Maori.

stretch

My God you're a pathetic animal. If you dont want to know about the indigenous people... the first people, the people who tourists want to know about, the culture that tourists want to know about, the people who you have lived beside for 150 years and know jack shyt about, then there is something terribly wrong with YOU. You need to be enlightened.

For Whuks sake, imagine if we didnt know how to speak english or knew zilch about Pakeha.

Re:TE REO MAORI COMPULSORY in schools Reply to this message
look at all the stupid monolingual comments...geez

if you live and you likey to stay in NZ why the wuck wouldnt you at least want to know the basics of an official language and at least pronounce the words and places correctly as there are so many your polaticians and media are disgraceful and should be embarrassed... gosh i was here 4 a coulpe days n i could say the names of peoople and places correctly

Why? i fluently speak write and read another language only spoken in my native country but it has given me the ability to adapt and quickly learn another language thats the advantage of being bilingual you idiots

so stop the rubbish talk that its useless overseas

how many of you crying overseas will actually go overseas
or even your kids for that matter

..try going overseas and being asked by a foreigner to say a few words of your native or first nation or another official language of your country and answer with "i think maori is monkey talk and useless overseas" watch the reaction you will get you ought to be ashamed you will be laughed at...

maybe not compulsory but definately an option as a second language(intead of freakin music or sum other dumb subject) from primary through to college

after all it is your choice
