Kia ora ki a koe Kym,
Bi-lingualism opens up so many different doors. Even if Maori has no 'use' overseas, at least it has a bearing here in Aotearoa.....as a stepping stone on to other lingual pursuits!!!
Closed minded wharkwits like StretchTit have no right adding their racist views to the arguement |

Well then StretchTit,
Let's back it up a bit ya ar5ehole!!!
When you vociferously say that you would never want Maori taught compulsorily in schools, given that it has never been done so, that smacks 110% of aa rednecked attitude that probably equals white supremism!!!!
Given that your kids are at least 1/16 Maori and have you as a significant parent possessed of such a racist attitue, it falls on anyone who sees fit to expose you for what you are!!!
A wharkin' half-breed racist who is ashamed of their birthright...!!!
Shame on you and pity on your offspring!!!
Spud!!!!!! |

Whether or not you choose to learn or speak Maori is your choice alone. It has always been. No one has forced anything onto you and never will. Reo Maori/Tikanga has NEVER been a compulsory undertaking and so it shouldn't be. But being adept in both English and Maori has enriched my life in considerable ways. I don't care that I have never used Maori outside of these borders...
I hope your new week is fruitful and fulfilling as I know mine will be |

I am of Maori Descent, but been brought up the European way-of which I will be eternally grateful for.
The World has become too PC now-I dont believe Te Reo should become Compulsory in Schools/Business-Te Reo is the Language of the Maori. If people of other Ethnic persuasions choose to learn that's all good, but nobody should be forced to do so.
There are Maori who, either by choice or circumstance,do not know how to speak Te Reo.They are the people who need to learn.
By the way,I think the recent dialogue between yourself & the 2/3 other respondents is very Immature-you all need to Chill! |

Awatea, did you not read Caps posts, Te Reo is not compulsory. Not all Maori agree that it should be either but should definitely be made an option.
What may seem like immature posts to you are signs of frustation with ignorant Pakeha who continually think they know whats best for Maori. You need to read all the posts and then make judgement before commenting!! |

There are the "Activist"element in Maori quarters who have, and still are, attempting to push making Te Reo compulsory.
It should be a Personal choice whether One decides they wish to Learn.
It is a well known fact that that, the younger a Person is,the easier it is to pick up a "Concept"-Language being one of them,so,maybe when a Brightspark decides every person should learn to speak Maori, they need to be onto it enough to know;"it may harder than one realises".
I made a personal choice to take Te Reo at Secondary School, and I'm glad I did-if I had left it another 10 years,I may never have bothered 'cos it would've been that much more difficult to grasp!
There's more to learning about a Culture than the Language.
Would I want to know how to speak Swahili,French,Sp *** h,Afrikaans,Mandarin unless there was a reason I would need to???I dont think so somehow! |

Morena Awatea,
I hope you're not pointing the gnarled finger at me!!! LOL.
I have never espoused a compulsory Te Reo element in any environment EXCEPT where it is an integral part of the Kaupapa. ie Kura Kaupapa Maori/Kura Maori.
It should remain a choice as it mine to be possessed of this treasure.
But it does bear some thinking about the near miss Oz and we had in WW2. We'd all be eating Sushi and Udon noodles by now. Now that's what you call 'compulsory'.
We all need a dose of 'chill pill' every now and then, but I am sick to the back teeth with the production line racists that sully these boards...AND let's be real, their comments don't come from any informed basis, but from an innate hatred of 'things' Maori!!!!
Kia pai to ra, ano hoki, nga mihi nui ki a koe mo ou tuhinga whakaaro.

No,I'm just giving my point of view about the whole issue.I did'nt mean to point the finger!
In my vocation,as it is probably the case in many,we had to do Treaty Training;Te Tiriti o Waitangi-OMG I learnt so much!!!At School the only things I knew were, the Date,Place, and main Signatories.
At the Treaty training,My Eyes were opened well & truly,it was def all good from a personal point of view, made me realise how little I knew about my Countrys' History, all the same I can & do understand why there is such an uproar over having Te Reo made compulsory-
1.Government Policy-seen to abide by Treaty Obligations
2.Maori Quota-Continuim from above,with input from Minority Parties/Factions.
3.Amounting to Political Correctness.
*The People whose Whakapapa originate in Aotearoa, should be the ones to learn Te Reo-should they choose to!

LOL..I know you weren't Awatea. Just having ya on (-:.
I can't argue with the guts of your korero, but other than being rightfully recognised as an official language of Aotearoa, what legislation has been put in place to make Te Reo compulsory??. Nada!!! It's just all Maori bashing scaremongering propaganda. Any PC moves to make it such could be its death knell I reckon.
It should be a matter of choice
