Re:TE REO MAORI COMPULSORY in schools Reply to this message
mm.. very interesting topic. Well, I am chinese and I am learning Eng and Te Reo Maori now. I can speak Cantonese, Chinese, Taiwanese and Ja panese language. I also learned French and German language.

Mm.. I won't argue wether Maori language is useful or not but I dun't c that Eng language is that useful tho. Most of the elder Chinese ppl came here, they dun't know Eng at all but they still can earn a living here, Eng to them is useless! But y do the Chinese ppl bother to learn Eng then? Becoz we r respecting to NZ/NZder.

So I think Maori and Pakeha should be both respecting to each other.. or to be treated equally. As Eng is compulsory in schools then y can't te reo Maori? shouldn't be that narrow minded.

Besides, all languages are tresures. It doesn't matter you have the chances to use it or not, if u learn it, it becomes your knowledge. Sometime, someday, somehow it may safe your life. ( at least u know how to ask for help :p )

In my understanding that compulsory could mean giving an opportunity for all ppl to learn it but it doesn't mean u need to love it or to get a A+++.

An example: Maths is a usefull subject and is compulsory. but so what? Many western kids hated it so much, even their parents and the teachers are saying Maths is useful and should learn it by heart but how many western kids are having good grades in Maths? Little. So it is not an excuse by saying that Te Reo Maori is not an useful language so it shouldn't be compulsory.

And... kids love learning new things, why dun't we give them a chance to learn? If they dun't like it, just treat it as Maths, hate it, throw it out of their brain, dun't study it, doesn't matter getting a low grade. That's the kids' choice. Kids are learning the same thing, but none of them are at the same level~

Besides I dun't c there is a difference in learning Math, Eng, Maori or other languages/subjects. All of them r part of knowledge.

Geez Newage...still a wharkwit eh???

What should be made compulsory is for kids to stay in school until such time they can prove they are educated. Then we wouldn't have idiots like you poncing around in these forums!!!!

Re:TE REO MAORI COMPULSORY in schools Reply to this message
very nice post rabbit the only thing you did was make sense

if you think one way, talk one way , sing only one tune then everything you do will be one way thats the life and the living way of monolinguals and sadly the fate of their offspring unable to see benefits of many different ways, unable to interact , understand, respect and appreciate other cultures 'cause they only stuck to their one ways very narrow minds unable to broaden their knowledge coz they only stuck in one way almost like living like a bee as a collective same thing everyday one way shame...

While I myself dont think it should be compulsory in schools, just to learn proper pronounciation of Maori names and place-names would be enough for me.To learn Te Reo Maori is not just to learn the language, the person will eventually learn Tikanga Maori(its part and parcel)-ie Marae etiquette,Tangihana,Whaik oreo,waiata-kapahaka-and of course Aroha!.And there is a whole lot more than that!
Mauri Ora.

Re:TE REO MAORI COMPULSORY in schools Reply to this message
yep is does not matter where you go on these message boards there are ssome dumb idiyukz and all borderline racist responses, maori is the true language of aotearoa remember that beautiful name got stolen off us but quite correct in saying english is the common language of newzealand and we all should know where that came from, beating our parents for speaking their language, racist beyond ones comprehension,my whanau would probably be one of the most fullest blooded maori of aotearoa, our father was full blooded maori, looking back on his whakapapa there were intertribal marraiges but none outside to other races ,he spoke the old te reo very fluent, myself i have never needed to speak te reo but i still love and respect those who have chosen to retain and speak our reo, to put the english language on a pedestal how degrading, get this story, when i was young i ended up in court for using offensive behaviour, being quite staunch and not scared of judges i said, excuse me judge why are you offended by your own disgusting language why are you charging me for using your white disgusting language it was taught this language at your white school when ny nan swears at me in maori its not disgusting pokokohua sounds better than the f...,c...,b...... yep the judge thought about it and told me to leave the court, get the moral of the story, a idiyuk wouldnt but kei te pai

Re:TE REO MAORI COMPULSORY in schools Reply to this message
If Maori is required, it should be put compulsory during primary and intermediate. That's the best and easiest time or stage to learn New languages.

Don't put compulsory for college and above. Brains getting heavier each time.

However, at least everyone should learn how to recite Haka with the All Blacks. =D

pooooor newage, you sound like you have some kind of lost your marbles disease but its okay. Not all of us are ashamed of our race like you numbnuts, you can't spell for shyt so you need to go back to school and learn English. No wonder you're not interested in your own culture if you can't even hack it in the Pakeha world.

I'm not racist you dork, and my elders love me to bits and pieces. I'm with them all the time on the Marae and they would be very proud of me fighting for what is tika and what is pono. Whats your foul excuse!!

Re:TE REO MAORI COMPULSORY in schools Reply to this message
Am I the only one that can't see the Treaty ( the only one !) in English, where it actually says Maori is to be a compulsory subject in mainstream schools?
Let alone the bit that says The future Maori Language Act will legitimate te reo maori as one of the official languages of New Zealand?
All I see is the bit that states the "Crown will Govern" !!
And that means if laws are adopted by one party that the majority dissapproves of - They will be out at the next election. :-0
But what do I know, perhaps I'll ask Helen whn she returns
