my fellow pakeha are a bit slow to realise taonga maori (eg te reo) are also taonga pakeha, in that to be a new zealander is to value Maori and the treaty that legitimizes our presence here.
respect and validation are the goals, while ignorance and xenophobia are the obstacles. |

Te Reo Maori is compulsory in Mainstream schools. The 2010 curriculum document has already been released comprised of sequential strands relevant to each level. It has already been implemented in a number of schools in the north and should have already been distributed to schools throughout New Zealand. I have also seen the document in working form used in a state integrated school in Northland regardless of the fact the school is only half funded by the government and maintains a special character. Te Reo maori is compulsory in primary mainstream education -
years 0 - years 8.

To fluency??? I bet not. Lips service only. Therefore in the context of being compulsory, it's not really!!!
