hine_raumati - You said its compulsory and it shouldn't be. It should be compulsory for Maori to learn their language and their culture, the emphasis on THEIR of course.
I do not see an benefit for my son to learn Maori and pull him out of any visits to Marai's because i do not want him learning Maori customs, they go against everything i believe in because they are man made traditions.
It is wrong to force anyone to learn someone elses culture but unfortunately we live in a small country where polititians walk all over the rights of individuals to make decisions for their children and their families.
No do not agree and never will! |

Language should be in schools and OPTIONAL There are Te Reo Schools and plenty of funding for special Maori courses and loads of scholarships and grants so the language andculture are well catered for despite brainwashing to the other side.
English is not the main language because of a Pakeha dominated plot Rangmarie but because through no one's fault inthis country it hasbecome theuniversal language of the world Nor was it a plot to disenfranchise Maori of their language. It was the Maori elder'sthemselves beingratherenlightened in those days who asked that their children speak only English so they would learnsomething as they understood education was the way ofthe future.
Non Maori as not as mono lingual as you think as we have many cultures. If you force something on people you do notget thepositiveresponse you want |

Drag up the past again(ho hum)we have moved on since those times, even today we do as we are told, society must have guidelines to operate within otherwise it becomes anarchy.
Te reo should not be compulsory but it could be a choice for those who desire to speak te reo, however, mainstream mandarin would be far more beneficial to learn in todays world.Any education is a benefit to society regardless of what the subject is |

blech. te reo maori should be compulsory, as should tikanga maori. there's way toomuch ignorance in this country.
if i hadn't had compulsory te reo at school, including tikanga and kapa haka, i'd probably still be a rural pakeha redneck too. |

well adam some of us are too busytryingto retain our own ancestry as we don;t have it handed to us on a plate. As I've said forcing gets a negative response and i've had enough proganda from the Maori studies I;ve already had
The bullsh**t I,ve come across in that would not make friends and influence people but the otherway |

| When my first child started school I booked a visit with my old primary school with the view to sending him there. They sent out a prospectus and in that I found they had compulsory capa haka. This was enough for me to cancel the visit and send my child elsewhere. I have heard that they no longer have compulsory capa haka as it was done at the instigation of a south african teacher who has since left. |

Adam,Adam,Adam if you think leaving the rural home as "a redneck pakeha" & probably moving to a city, you can`t suddenly become a maori, what are you raho,as I said, learn te reo by all means if you wish but it should not be compulsory,if you want it,learn it,if not, respect others opinions, unfortunately for you maybe, you had no choice but to learn english at school, same for me also,no choice(see we do have something in common) but now if we choose,we can all learn te reo,all of us...I choose not to.
Jgini, dont waste too much time going off politely at them, chuck a few facts around & they all leap back into the whare & consult their carved post, poke the tongue out, roll the of the eyes, & THEN, put the kid on the clothesline to dry. |
