| My parents (75 and 80) look after my 43 year old handicapped sister. She can be a real hand full at times. Mum got cataracts about 10 years ago in both eyes. She was placed on a waiting list. After 5 years or so she had stil not had an operation to fix her eyes. I played a bit of merry hell with the people in the system and eventually mum was taken in for an operation. What did they do. The idiots just fixed one of the eyes. She was told when the fixed one got bad again they would then operate on the other eye. Fred Hollowes used to do these ops for $25. My questions are why could they not have operated on both of mums eyes at the same time and why did it take so long to get any action. |

You have my total sympathy...so many older people are denied any quality of life because of their age...in any other society in the so called developed world this would be called 'Ageism' a very definite form of penalty and descrimination, and so anti social.
Hundreds of millions extra have been apparently allocated to health but not one red cent extra has been spent on such things.
Too often this governement in particular have set a barrier between the aged and youth crying out about the cost of the aging community on younger generations.
We are expected now to care for our own. Hundreds of millions should have been saved through the closure of institutions around this country....but where did it go?
Some of Michael Cullen's magic millions...money he has that he can't or won't explain. |

| NZ health is no longer that of a developed country it is decline and the added $100's of millions the govt. supposedly puts into the system each year goes no further down the chain than administration. It's like education. The govt. says it's free yet in Auckland education costs parents a whopping $47 MILLION each year in 'doantions' The Minister of Health, like that of Chris Carter [education] I'm sure are on performace bonuses. |

| Some of NZ's health 'boards' have so many people on them they dwarf the numbers the biggest corporations in the world use. I agree that it is a total overkill of accountants and pen pushers because all they are doing is soaking up the funds needed fpor patients. |

I agree, the problem with hospitals is not the government, but the people running the show. As soon as they get more money, it goes into administration and invent new jobs.I have been to waikato hospital and it is a rabbit warren of offices.The trouble is that no one running these hospitals are really accountable,they should either lose their jobs, or in someway be accountable for the cockup in he hosptals.Trouble is, these degree based people always have a good excuse for their failure,similar to what they would not find acceptable from the peons on the bottom ,or people are mesmerised by their qualifications.
My father, also was admitted to hospital, only because my mother jumped up and down and made noises, where they found he had an incurable, but treatable, bone cancer that his incompetent doctor failed to recogonise, because he was a old an, so it was old age according to the doctor, not an illness. |

Yes our hositals have certainly gone down badly.
The food is so disgusting.
The cleaning of hospitals has fallen back badly.
Nurses have too many patients to care for.
You go in there for a operation and are certain to come home with a bug. Having to go back for antibiotics.
I was on a waiting list for two years for a knee replacement. The pain was so severe in knee I just had to go private and get it done. Paid $12000 for it, but it was well worth it.
I think it is about time hospitals got there acts together. We are fast becoming very backwards in this country. |

| Have you also thought & considered the amount of hosiptal cars driven home, which also adds to hospital expenses in a big way!! Know a local chap who does constant repairs to all the hospital cars & he attends to at least two a week... This is where many costs are absorbed, instead of performing much needed operations...Through my work travelling around the local town I must see about 8 a day & how much of this travelling is nescessary, makes me wonder?? |

Top heavy!....yes indeed. Far too many Indians.
Canterbury Health, a couple of years back chopped 7000 from its waiting lists and when the person posing as their chairman was confronted about it he said, "It is only a form of rationing."
I ask you...but don't blame that on anyone other than government. They set up the stuctures not the hospital or health boards. Government also set up the energy system so that we the consumers face up to 5 tiers of activity and associated costs from the time electricity leaves the taxpayer owned and paid for generation plant, whatever type that might be, until it reaches our homes. All of those employed within these rip off systems are now dependent on the State for their continued employment. Many are otherwise unemployable....many, many of them have come into this country to take jobs your kids might have had if the government of the day had provided education and training complimentary,or appropriate to the country's needs or percieved needs........no mantter where you turn, some half competent Minister, government official or petty pubic servant will turn up in the flow. |

| its soooooooooo easy to blame all the problems nz is facing to indians or other immigrants. why do u forget that newzealand needs all the money that the immigrants pay to come and live in ur country.besides 90% of indians are hardworking and educated. ur children's jobs r taken by us indians becoz they r not deserving enough, not qualified enough.if only kiwi parents be more responsible towards their children instead of boozing and engaging in domestic violence, pay more attention to providing a safe and productive environment to children this country would be a heaven to live and responsible parents raising responsible kids who grow into responsible bureaucrats and politicians. besides crying fowl over indians taking ur country's jobs is not going to solve country's problems.u live in 21st century.have a braoder view of the world, everywhere its mixed culture.be more tolerant. |

| Don't worry folks. Once the free trade agreement is signed with China we'll have all the doctors we can cope with and that govt. will make sure of that. Wonder what the Chineese name for New Zealand is. If one considers the fact that 41,000 kiwi's left for Australia last year then someone has to fill the gap. our medical system is so disgusting.
I heard of a man who noticed a huge lump inside his mouth , which is cancerous. He is still waiting for treatment. In meantime it is growing fast. He has got to the stage of eating everything through a straw. poor man.
Same with heart problems, waiting to have bypass, should not be a waiting list for this, my Aunty died while waiting. So 3rd world war.... |

| As an educated 'kiwi', i do not know anyone within my social circle of equally or greater educated 'kiwi's' who blame non 'kiwi' people or indians for taking jobs here in NZ. In fact, when a young person can earn 3 times or more as much in another country - why stay here. However, you are right in that, as in any society, there are always those who do not achieve as much as they could due to a lack of belief in themselves because of wider socialogical issues and parenting. this is not a NZ problem only, and as a 'kiwi' i take exception to being dumped into a generalised group and labelled. I am sure that you as an educated, qualified and deserving indian would also take exception to being labelled ... as you said - it is the 21st century - have a broader view. |

Frankly I don't care were the Doctor comes from as long as they're competent, Actually if Smoking and drinking Alcohol was taken out of the equalation we would only need 5 story hospital building instead of 10 story buildings and only half the doctors,Nurses and top brass, Oh yes I know tax on these pays for these but pay for the pain and suffering people suffer from these. And our ACC would be cheaper too.
Inany case Chinese can only stay for a maximum of 18 months anyway or thought if in high needed professions I guess they will be allowed to stay longer, |

Solution.
My Mother is elderly and in a home, she has had a fall and all the time she complains about the pain in her leg.
They are doing nothing not even interested, I thought they could have least have it x-rayed.
So sad to be old...she is such a lovely Mum.
