QUALITY TRADESMEN Reply to this message
This is the third time I have found a Tradesmen in the courier that has done a terrible job in my home! How can we check a Tradesmen's credentials before we hire them?? Is there nothing to stop cowboys advertising in the courier when they're not even qualified or skilled?

ask for names and addresses of previous clients and ring them is one way, also never ask for a cheap quote , you sometimes get what you pay for

Re:QUALITY TRADESMEN Reply to this message
If you want quality tradesmen and a good job look in the yellow pages. Tradesmen who are serious about staying in business are in the yellow pages and pay GST and taxes. Expect to pay a fair price including GST. Tell him exactly what you want and can afford to pay.
Ask for references from previous customers and check them. Do not just shop around for the cheapest quote. Pay the tradesman. Do not engage tradesmen for work you cannot afford. If you can't pay when it is due for a genuine reason let him know straight away. Do not make up false excuses for not paying such as criticising workmanship. You will find all the good tradesmen will avoid you or quote really high if you do not follow the rules.

There is a website that get Dunn and Bradstreet to pre-screen their Tradesmen. It's called tradeexperts.co.nz or tradeexpress.co.nz - I cant remember but if you google them they come up. They also have a list of the top 10 questions you should always ask a potential Tradesmen. Our company uses this website all the time.

Word of mouth is best. My husband is a tradesman and that is how he has always got his jobs. Works both ways:-)

Re:QUALITY TRADESMEN Reply to this message
I am so fortunate I have a QUALITY TRADESMAN right here in my own home.
He is a perfectionist and always say's "IF you do a job you do it well" that is his motto and does he get work he is alway's in demand because everyone of us does "NOt want shoddy work"
I guess I am very lucky and I do not take him for granted
...Yes I would look in the Yellow Pages and sometimes word of mouth speaks volumes

Re:QUALITY TRADESMEN Reply to this message
I am a painter/handyman been doing this for 30 years as a part time job,I have not taken a apprenticeship or got a cert and yes I agree with the above massage as there are a lots of cowboys and girls out there.
Advertising in paper or yellow pages is not alway the best as you can still get cowboys. Word of mouth is the best way.
Master trade association is a good start but not all good tradesman join them because of cost and if they do join and you have problem you can complain to them and go from there.
Remember you can also get cowboys and girls even with people from trade cert one.
Yes it is getting harder to get quality work done these days as you only got to watch fair go and target.
It not always the people doing the job at fault sometime it the customer who want the cheapest job so the person got to cut corners.
As for me I don't allow for this, I don't cut corner or do things cheaply, they get the best out of me and any hidden problem I let them a.s.a.p .

Re:QUALITY TRADESMEN Reply to this message
Yes, Joe public want to be assured that they are getting qualified trades people to do the job. Seeing the evidence of previous work might help if it can be verified. Word of mouth is one of the better ways, and yes, agree about using the yellow pages especially if you don't know who to call. The trouble has been incompetent so called 'trades people' doing shoddy work just to make some quick bucks and are not there to provide a service. These ones are totally dishonest. While others are simply poor trades people - you get them - rough as guts and take short cuts. Trade Certificate or Advanced Trade Certificate are quals gained by older and more experienced tradesmen. Don't pay them in full until the job is finished to your expectations. Let them know what these are at the start. Don't take their word that the job is going to cost more because other things they have found need doing. Get two or three quotes and look at the differences. Sometimes the most expensive is because that company doesn't want to do the job, whereas the cheap option is they'll do it but poorly. So, my advice is to ask lots of questions - be blunt, afterall, you are paying for the service!

Re:QUALITY TRADESMEN Reply to this message
A little off topic, but if the economy doesn't pick up again soon, there won't be many tradesmen left to complain about. Things are that bad, in spite of the propaganda about the recession being "over". 2009 was a rough year for tradesmen, and January, 2010, is the slowest January I've seen in 15 years. Dead, actually. Unless things change soon, I'll be out of business in another 3 months. I'm not alone... there are heaps more of us in the same boat.

Re:QUALITY TRADESMEN Reply to this message
Go into a Trade Supply shop and tell them what kind of work you require to be done. Then ask if they would have any Trades people on thier books they would recommend.I work in this industry and i will only recomend those people I would like my company to be associated with.OK I get the sale but its a win -win for all concerned.I always give out three contacts to keep everyone honest.

Re:QUALITY TRADESMEN Reply to this message
and then sometimes a very well trained and homnest tradesman trying to do the best for his family and their future is grounded by an ignorant and poorly scheduled manager..was supposed to be moving to Tom Price in northern WA but seemed to meet an australian con artist who was the area coordinator for sub contractor RCR Tomlinson who stated there was a placement for me and was even so deceitful as to discuss full accommodation and employment perks with me and guarantee I had a placement and then delivered a message employment cancelled via the recruitment agency without even having the decency to inform me first, why would you not talk with me first Antony Hyatt?...disgusting behaviour which everyone in NZ should be aware of...be careful who you deal with and background check to ensure you don't receive a promise of employment when you have none.
