You have the most stupidest piece of shyte stuck in that part between your ears.

You have not given a shred of researched proof to back up your spewing larva mouthed discharge!!

Your wmf government would not sanction an official language being taught in any education medium if it was child abuse...
ya ferken dork head!

No rebelion it's only mentioned in a three lined sentence in the school curriculum dated 2009. Pathetic situation is that not only are teachers from all dinominations crying out for material, children really like learning the language. However the government does very little funding for it and and when each school that is trying to implement a Maori component into their curriculum is faced with the task 25 - 45 minutes per week for a class is not adequate.

Re:TE REO MAORI COMPULSORY in schools Reply to this message
Most certainly 100 percent, as it is not offered as a language subject at A LOT of schools - the stuff that schools do teach that cant be bothered employing a proffesional - looks to me like 'kiwiana' with a kia oras and ka kites and ka pais thrown in, nothing else.
Thay dont even teach the colours or numbers like they used to in main stream when I was a kid (primary).
The intermediate I was looking at prior to choosing the one I did for my son to attend next year didnt even offer Te Reo at that age - HOW PATHETIC - and its a very large Int 800 plus pupils

kia ora lora...
I have a major gripe with TPM and have sent a letter outlining this to them making my following points known.

TPM pushed deals for the following:

ETS for Maori carbon foot payments
8,000 insulation for low income homes [the blardy govet was going to do that anyway!]
Maori Flag flying on Wai day

It was a good opportunity to push for te reo Maori as a compulsory language in all schools... why waste money on a te reo Maori curriculum document in 2009 if there is no teeth to it!

Bare all resources to go with it unlike the English Curriculum document!

Re:TE REO MAORI COMPULSORY in schools Reply to this message
rangi says
'If it is compulsory for Maori children to learn english in mainstream schools, then why is it not compulsory for non-maori children to learn Maori in mainstream schools?

It merely isn't about money and capital, but the need for equality and further empowerment of both Maori and Non-maori children in mainstream schooling.'

Simple answer- because if those children want to communicate with the outside world they have to utilise coherent English and sentence structure. Further-more English at school is mostly about LITERATURE and reading themes and so on. As Maori has no true individual written language its literary history is rather limited.

What would the kids read in place of Shakespeare, Orwell's Brave New World, or the Lord of Flies?

English at School isn't so much about learning English as a language but rather studying the underlying themes and philosophy's of thought that have existed for over 8 centuries.

Simply put while Maori may have these themes, processes and thoughts it was never written down and HENCE impossible to directly study.

Is that right jeza

I hate to presume ....but have you yourself ever learned tha Maori ....freely honestly and fully?

If not why presume about stuff you know nowt about?

Get a grip of our reality.... Maori were "FORCED" to learn a foreign language in their own country.... were you?

jeza - out of interest do you know if such novels have been translated into Samoan/Tongan/Fijian???

I actually am a believer that the language shouldnt be forced on non-maori, but it should be compulsory to offer the subject for those that wish to learn - in ALL schools.

Re:TE REO MAORI COMPULSORY in schools Reply to this message
Ps jeza - I believe what ela is suggesting, have you ever attempted to learn Te Reo yourself? Their is so much behind the language - based on our customs and levels of respect - same as in English and French - its also about Maori myths, Gods etc
The good thing with Te Reo is that it encombasses Marae protocol, Kapa Haka, Respect for elders, Prayer, Religion etc- it is an all encombassing part of maoridom rapt up in the language and in order to learn one you learn it all
THIS is what I feel makes it so beneficial for our tamariki - they get a chance to see their culture through 'new' eyes - things they may have never experienced before
You, yourself have said to me on a past post that you came from a different walk from me - you had experienced little of what I feel true maoridom is - a 'hard' upbringing lacking in 'true' culture
Learning Te reo gives this to children that may have come from backgrounds such as your own...

Pride, respect, empathy, knowledge for all things and all that is maori because of what the learning entails

Thats what I feel...

I think it is a wonderful skill and a treasure for those that wish to learn - it breaks down barriers and opens up a whole new mindset - as any education should...

craigmacdonald 11:24am ...
Do you deem that a relevant excuse? I dont!
You absolutely cannot blame learning te reo Maori for the lack of pronunciation of English words.

I lay that back in your court for two obvious reasons:

[1] The lack of understanding consonants and vowels usage in the classroom

[2] The advent of a new cyber language as in texting

Both these mediums have usurped the relevance of English as we once knew it.

Lorakapel was correct in her subsequent posts.... learning the language is but one aspect... understanding the Maori fabric of their society would equip the learner to an encompassing knowledge of Maori as a people.

Maybe then a better understanding will ensue instead of constantly undermining Maori.
