Tax to GDP Reply to this message
Interesting that depite all the whinging to the contary NZ is 17th down from the highest tax in relation to GDP at 36.6%, Sweden is highest at 51.3%, UK at 16th with 37%, Australia at 27th with 30.9%, US at 27th with 27.9%, lowest was Chile at 39th with 18.3%.
I guess at the pudits will now try and say that 'Oh what about G.S.T. well the UK has Vat as well, and as it says TAX it must include ALL tax.
So we are as badly off as the whingers would have us believe.
Try and buy fuel for your car in the UK that takes a bigger bite of your wages than it does in NZ.

... but your pay is higher in the UK so as a % of your disposable income you pay less. The cost of living here is very high. Mortgage interest rates higher than many coutnries (including the UK and US).

I do not think this should be about looking over the fence to see what others have, it should be about doing more/ better with what we have. Most of these economies are larger, stronger and more diversified. Ours is dependant on limited commodities. Our tax system does not encourage investment or diversification. It has few "deductions" and, for the most part, does not allow for "investment" in employees (FBT). This restricts economic growth, personal income growth and diversification.
