| In an attempt to end bigotry, hatred and corruption, Fiji staged a bloodless coup. New Zealand had the option of either not doing anything about it and let Fiji deal with its problems, or be supportive. Instead, from Helen Clark and Key, NZ led a global posse on an anti-fiji effort, attacking the island on the global stage and forcing isolation. All this caught the Fijians by surprise, and during a recent visit, it was difficult not to notice the number of anti-kiwi writings on walls and bus stops. In the markets, NZ has become the major talk (very unfondly), and Fijians love to laugh about how NZ loves to pick on peaceful islanders but didn't have the slightest of nerve when it came to confronting terrorist organizations or communist regimes like China. In Fiji, NZ is seen as Australia's stooge, the same manner in which Britain is regarded in its relationship with the US. Does NZ really believe that the poison that it has injected in Fijians will go away simply because of a democratic election ? The process may be different, but the dislike for anything kiwi exists all over the island group. While many in Fiji would like nothing less than to boot the NZ high commission out of the country and end all ties with the kiwis, the question still remains-why the infactuation with Fiji ? |

| probably stems from the resultant exodus of Fijian Indians into the country and in no particular order, relatively recent riots in the commercial centre(predominantly run/owned by Indians, removal of a democratically elected PM,various imprisonments, denial of human rights, media censorship, a near military state and heavily reliant on UN peacekeeping roles, fear of Chinese naval expansion in the region and more importantly a rise in taxi fares from Mangere to the inner city combined with language and map reading problems. |

To say nothing of no constitution; troops can fire on innocent people in the street with legal immunity; no elections before 2014 - I know Fijians who don't think it will ever happen; bullying the NZ government to let family of regime officials study here.
Sad. |

| firstly, pardon the spelling, late night writing :). anyways, on a sidenote, the constant increase in migration from NZ to Australia of the anglos and increased "coloured" migration into NZ points towards an increase in the percentage of population of non english speaking people, so the taxi languages would have to be something that kiwis would have to adjust to in the future. Fiji indians move to NZ because many have families already there, but given australia, US, Canada as choices, NZ is usually the last option, being not so economically sound.Chinese coming into the Pacific (and they already have an influence in fiji) is a good thing as far as pacific islands are concerned. It greatly neutralizes the cross tasman dominance in the south pacific. NZ really wants to have its cake and it eat it too. They need to keep up with the change in global market by increasing business with the chinese, but unlike the US, they do not have the guts to question china's not so appealing human rights record. as for those human rights, those who know fiji know that there is more freedom and rights to walk the streets at any time of day or night now under military rule than there ever was during the days of a corrupt regime. fiji is a perfect example of how easy it is to carry out any sort of attrocity because democracy produces a blind eye. such was also the case in GWB's US run. |

| the term "exodus" is overblown. noone swims to NZ, hence everyone that comes to NZ does so through visas issued by the NZ govt, and they don't give visas out of the goodness of their hearts but because of the need in various employment sectors. NZ has a strict quota. the premise that people in fiji are somehow looking to go to NZ to greatly better their lives is fault. the primary reason is that NZ is a 3 hour plane ride to home in fiji whereas US is 11 hours away. everyone likes to feel close to home, but noone believes that the opportunities that are available in other western countries are also available in abundance in NZ. NZ is nice to visit, it is a fun place, but an average joe can't make it there the same way they can in other parts of the world. |

| bullying the NZ govt ? that's a laugh dear. how ? since when does the NZ govt do what fiji wants ? the NZ govt's law is a joke. for instance, there is a judge in civil court in fiji who presides over domestic violence cases, far from the military stuff. recently her daughter needed eye surgery in NZ (she's 6 years old) and was denied by the NZ govt. it shows how much of a laugh the NZ policy is. i guess a 6 year old little girl is such a threat to NZ ! however, fiji is also to blame for its reliance on NZ and australia. That is changing. now china and india are coming to aid and fiji is improving its own medical abilities, and hopefully will influence other island nations to be self sufficient. |

| kiwi geofreak, i can assure you that troops taking over fiji was a cakewalk with nowhere near the same violent force as when NZ police ripped through maori stongholds a couple of years ago. that act rattled people in fiji more than whatever has happened domestically. there is nowhere in fiji that's as dangerous as karanagahape road on a saturday night. |

funny, we never noticed NZ south of fiji until they started interfering. you'd think people who have never heard of fiji wouldn't bother sticking their nose in fiji's business-funny how that happens. the sniffing in fiji affairs is baffling. the only taupo i know of is the area north of honolulu. didn't know u had one too. |
