Michael Laws Reply to this message
I think he was 100% correct in his reply to the children from that school. And for them to now get a Certificate from the Race Relations Commissioner is total madness. Another case of the Goverment not standing up and recognising the problem in society with some Maori with the way they bring up their childern.

He was really xtr67.Although not a pc man mind but then we are having pc up to the gills.
What amazes me is the lack of adults in NZ.
Fancy indoctrinating children. That equates to cowardice. An inability to fight political battles on a mature level.Dirty politics and dirty parenting.
-and the lessons these children have now learned-well bang goes their innocence along with their childhoods.

Re:Michael Laws Reply to this message
While I think Michael Laws handled this in a really childish way I don't think that the Race Relations guy has helped the situation any. He has expressed his personal opinion on Laws letters back to the children. We don't actually pay him to express his personal opinions do we??? If so I agree with Laws - I want to vote on who this person is in the future if they are going to speak for me all over the place - I understood that he was there to investigate breeches of the Act - a person that people can complain to and he is suppose to promote a working environment between the races - how did these actions assist in promoting a working relationship between these two groups?

Well put Shail.moore.
Cant beleive children have been awarded certificates for that.
The Children in the B.O.P area that started a collection fund for the people of Samoa are surely more deserving.

A child approaches his school master and says , "..excuse me master... my name has been mispelt for the past 150 years ...I am over it now.. could you please correct the spelling of my name... I would be so gratefull if you do so..."

And the school master answers.. " ... I will spell your name ass I pleeesse ... gett bakke to whort you do best... "

And the child shall be castigated for having been upset at the master's response..

And the coloured person who showed kindness to the child shall be castigated for having done so...

and the master and his clan can do no wrong...

we are in wonderland arent we all.. or is that 'wunderlund'!!

How many people will support John laws' name change for this country ...'nooseelandesiarikaaa'

Re:Michael Laws Reply to this message
Michael laws needs his head read,i backed his stance on the gang issue he had in Whanganui but not this 1.i dont take sides when it comes to race as im both maori & pakeha, but the way nz is going in terms of bagging on a couple of school children is shamefull.if it was a couple of pakeha kids writing to mike it would be a different story wouldnt it?

Re:Michael Laws Reply to this message
Lance Walden I maintain Laws reply and attitude would have been the same if supposed Pakeha children wrote that letter because thats his personality and racism in NZ is an issue to some unenlighted beings
What however the real issue is to any thinking person is the use of children for political purposes.
Might I also point out to rednecks of all racial persuasions-Children are children and should be allowed to be.They are our future and if we allow them childhood they will take their innocence and unbiased views into their futures and our futures.
I cant believe the ignorance on here.

Yes belle...as if primary school children can understand politics without 'coaching' from a 'teacher' who has their own political aganda.

Keep our primary education 'apolitical'.

Seriously.

Re:Michael Laws Reply to this message
Having read some of the letters from the students of Otaki Kura Kaupapa I couldn't see anything other than kids who know their history giving reasonable rationale to the name change.

Law says their expressions were demanding and expressed anger. There were certainly no demands but definite opinions as to why the name should contain the letter H and their expressions of anger appeared to point at the lack of consultation or disregard with Maori of the area.
The following is a letter from one student.

Hello to you Michael Laws the Mayor of Whanganui
Hello my name is Amokura. I am 12 years of age and I attend Otaki School in Te Korowai Whakamana class.
The topic of this letter is to enable changes to the name of Wanganui to the correct name Whanganui.
I am not happy with the council and I am angry with your ability to challenge this serious subject as this is belittling the authority of maori of that area.
My opinion is to put the letter H back into the name of the town Wanganui to Whanganui. I also encourage the Whanganui District Council to put the letter back in the name, and not focus on the costings.

Now I ask you...where is the intimidation in this. Most of the letters were written in this tone.

Good on them for getting a certificate for healthy expression of the town they were born in and showing leadership, why shouldn't they have a say.

Re:Michael Laws Reply to this message
What kind of a letter starts off with Hello to you??
Should it not be Dear Sir or Madam? Granted that Michael Laws is a bit of a tosser but if not starting with Dear Sir then maybe Dear Mr Laws? or Dear Mayor of Wanganui?

Re:Michael Laws Reply to this message
Johnstone, we dont have a Dear sir/madam in te reo Maori. Our greeting salutations are beautiful but translated doesn't give full credence.

That aside it's the contents of the letter that was in disrepute and drove the Mayor to distraction and caused asperity.

Re:Michael Laws Reply to this message
Tu tangata I can't let you get away with that one sided remarks. You should read your own history about what Maori thought about the Ausralian Aboriginee when they came into contact with them courtesy of a British ship that took them over to Aussie, prob on their way to buy guns so they could kill all their peace loving relativesw here. talk about derogatory insensitive, ignorant, biased racist remarks. I scoff at your own prejudices.I ask what happened to the Maori population of Aotaroa between 1800 and 1840? Disappeared into slavery and mass murder unprecedented in history. This wasn't mere utu this was genocide. And you have the termerity to say the settlers were racist? We are/were/and prob always will be- you think your tribe is superior to another and so on and so forth. Get real, be honest.

Re:Michael Laws Reply to this message
And yes, Laws over reacted. he should have gone to the school and debated the issue in a reasonable manner.Explained what democracy is, and how local dialects possibly should stand over pronunciation based on the reluctance of missionaries to put F's instead of WH's in words. If Turiana pronounces Wanganui with a silent H then that's good enough for me and viva la difference, instead of universal BBC Maori.

what gets me about him is he rewrites history to suit himself-his column in sunday star times today proves this point. he needs to go back and study the whakapapa of whanganui.

Re:Michael Laws Reply to this message
kia ora ripeka.... love that word "asperity"

Its kinda funny in a way that ones language as in kia ora can mean hello, yes, thankyou, its the inflections of the language!

The same can be said about asperity of another group using the insinuations of a language, yet remain above board. The beauty being it can also be derogatory... using the inflections of the tongue to get a point across. Only a person versed in that language would get the message! lol
