| So now the Nats are going to have a go at the people on the Invalids benefit,The people with Mental Illness, Cancer, Brain tumours etc are going to have to justify why they get a benefit more often & I guess they will probably lose some of their support too. Good on you Nats Have a go at those people who have no voice, why not bring in Euthanasia, then you wouldnt have to give them anything or supply them with a few pills so they can Suicide. Just where is this extreme Right wing party going to stop. |

Those of us on invalids with genuine medical reasons are already under fairly close medical watch anyway, so I doubt it will affect us too much (I hope). What it will do is weed out the non-serious medical cases.
I still think though, that Nationals priority ought to be DPB. |

Does anyone have the news article on this they can share? All I read was that they are looking to have closer medical scrutiny. Eg Mental health you need to be closely monitered etc... This should be happening anyway.
Have I missed something? |

| No not at all tjmiddlemiss, the point is , that the first hearing goes to the select committee, etc.. and there has already be and more than likely, continued protests in regards to the Bill.. waiting till its passed, would be a waste of time.. public submissions, but then hey.. it would not be the first bill to pass and become legislation , irrespective of public outcries . |

| Even Kiwi Saver isnt safe, while Finance companies were going broke, some of those were recommended Partners & some people lost what they had already saved because Kiwi Saver is not Govt Guaranteed. |

National eyes invalids as welfare returns to agenda
Welfare reform is in the Government's sights again but Labour say it's too soon given rising numbers on unemployment benefits.
"We made a number of undertakings before the election," Mr English said on TVNZ's Q & A.
"... and I'm working through material now with [Social Development and Employment Minister] Paula Bennett to take to Cabinet to put in place the promises we made."
Labour deputy leader Annette King said the Government was giving mixed messages about the state of the economy.
"If you were saying we are now in a position where unemployment was going to be dropping every week - not increasing - then you could say there will be opportunities and training chances for people on benefits but that's not what Mr English is saying."
Mr English also spoke about people on the invalid's benefit. On September 30, 85,015 people received invalid benefits and 56,384 sickness benefits.
"Effectively we have [more than] 80,000 people where officially the welfare system has said they won't work again. We think that's a waste of those people and of their potential so we want to look at how to encourage more people off those longer-term benefits."
Mr English said unemployment forecasts might be better than predicted, likely 7 per cent rather than 8 per cent. The rate was 6 per cent now. - NZPA

Finance Minister Bill English said yesterday that as the recession eased, the planned reform the Government put on hold when the severe downturn hit would begin. He also said invalids might be targeted.
National's welfare policy announced in August last year included: introducing more frequent assessments for sickness beneficiaries; forcing long-term unemployed (those with more than one year on the dole) to find work; and requiring solo parents to seek part-time work once their youngest child is 6.
National said it would increase th ... |

| What Paulla Bennett said today, (not last august) is that all benefits will be looked at before Christmas. She would make no further comment. |

| The problem is WINZ does not have the ability to get beneficiaries the help they need in getting them back to work. WINZ generally fails to provide adequate tangible support no matter how willing the beneficiary is in wanting to work regardless of capacity. Current assessments are regularly done so Paula Bennett etc simply show they have no understanding of the current procedures. |

| Being able to find work within the boundaries of our illness is what is really required. Winz do try and help where they can but I know in a town like Tok they have so many unemployed people, and they take priority over invalids and sickness were works concerned. |

| Aren't those with mental illness just on sickness? Having to deal with a bunch of dummies hassling them as well as trying to cause em more pain, will most probably give those on invalids mental illness on top of the problems they already have :) |
