Government perks Reply to this message
This debate has been coming up and then disappearing for years.
I think it is time for the NZ public to say that enough is enough, and that ALL MP's, government officials, etc should stop getting these peaks- flights and so on, that are paid for by John Q taxpayer.
I have done my research, and other Mp's (the very junior ones) get an annual salary of $131,000. The leader of the opposition (this case-Labour) gets $243,700 per year. The PRIME MINISTER gets $393,000.
If the MPs at the bottom of the pile are earning $131K per year (from taxpayer money) why should the taxpayers have to foot the bill for an MP to travel? Or their acommodation costs?
I for one want to see an end to all these free trips they're getting and start paying for travel from their 131K salary. So I am going to start petitioning for signitures for Goverment Parliament to final stop the PERKS, and urge others to do the same.
Now, for it to be successful, 300,001 signitures are required for a valid balloted vote.
If anyone is keen to stop the perks, let me know and we'll kick the wheels in motion

If you want to stop perks where do you start and stop?

1. subsidised meals at Bellamys?
2. their fabulous superannuation deal?
3. ongoing perks if a member for over 9 years - free local travel for life...
4. housing allowances...?

...personally I've no issue with these benefits while working, but the tap should be closed once you leave...the salaries are hardly enormous - the head of NIWA is on some $800,000...corporate heads make millions in NZ...so the PM is actually low paid...

Yes, MPs spending does need to be cut back...but there're people out there that get paid millions for doing jack s**t for other people, as Ace points out.
