Letter to John Reply to this message
As a fellow caucasian New Zealander I found Hone Harawira's e-mail to be delibrately inflammatory - he must have known that this would cause an uproar - and think that it will cause unnecessary division at a time when race relations are starting to improve again.
I support the Treaty of Waitangi settlement process as a human rights activist and find that after all of this time and effort to address past greivances, to have someone come out in such an aggressive manner taking aim at New Zealand Europeans individually and collectively, is frankly unbecoming of a NZ MP.

I am aware that the Maori Party are going to discipline him, and accept that there is nothing you can do about that other than be prepared for the backlash that will probably follow if damage control does not go far enough. However, there is a second problem.

It is not just Mr Harawira who has done wrong here. Reports carried by various NZ media agencies say Race Relations Comissioner Joris de Bres appears to be sanctioning Mr Harawira's inflammatory and bigotted comments by suggesting that they are lawful within the context of the Human Rights Act. If I said of another race, what Mr Harawira said, I would rightfully be very unpopular with a lot of people - I would be in disgrace and be expected to apologise to all who took offence.
So where is the consistent approach by the Race Relations Commissioner ensuring that racism is not condoned in anyway by the Human Rights Commission?

When I see things like this, I do not think that the HRC is above discriminatory practise itself, which weakens it's moral and legal mandate. That is a sad and disturbing indictment of the HRC, but it is one that many ordinary Kiwi's would be inclined to think if abusive inflammatory behaviour like this is condoned.

I have to ask this question:

If a Race Relations Commissioner appears to sanction such behaviour, inflammatory as it is, is that RRC doing their job?

I believe you as Prime Minister are trying to ...

Re:Letter to John Reply to this message
set a very good standard of conduct for New Zealand and I applaud you for that. Now you have a challenge to make sure that ALL New Zealand government agencies, ministries and departments without regard for their purpose
do not act in a way that is unbecoming of NZ, and in violation of human rights law.

Re:Letter to John Reply to this message
It's a good letter. Valid issues. Joris appears not to understand his role. But let's leave it at that. It's too nice a place and too nice a day to be firing endless insults at each other.

Re:Letter to John Reply to this message
an imported race relations commissioner, who himself is the worst kind of racist, is never going to see anything wrong in anyone` actions, unless they are white.

Sorry kiwi, didn't see your post till now. Done the washing & hung it out for the missus, had a feed, nephew has turned up with a refractor telescope I can borrow for the week, gonna give him a beer, sit in the sun by the stream with him and the better half, chew the fat and grill him mercilessly about the new girlfriend. Real life goes on now the sun's out. NZ's full of great people of all shades & cultural backgrounds who enjoy life and have no racist axes to grind. I'm gonna spend time with two of them.

Re:Letter to John Reply to this message
Former Waitangi Tribunal director Buddy Mikaere wrote an email to Harawira complaining about his actions.

"... you're no better than that w***er Rodney Hide and the white mofos you complain about," Mikaere wrote, referring to Hide's actions in taking his partner on an overseas ministerial trip despite the Prime Minister John Key's direction against the practice.

"And get off your moral high horse while you're at it - nobody forced you to be an MP."

Boys will be boys is dead right.Dont know why people get so spunked up over it.
Self righteousness is a good cover for a persons own racist agenda.

Re:Letter to John Reply to this message
Firstly Harawira sent the email not to the public domain, but in private to one person.
His comments are inflammatory and racist as he himself is so pro maori as to be very openly anti European(historical reasons abound in his dislike for all things european).
The fact the recipient of the email chose to go public is not Harawira's fault.
I doubt he would express such views in any public forum.
Under freedom of speech I'd defend his right to say as he wants. Under his responsibility as a parliamentarian he should have chosen a wiser road and I do hope his views are not those shared by his constituents.

Re:Letter to John Reply to this message
If I sent him an E Mail (I am a member of this public you speak of) It is an open e mail by inference. If it was complimentary, I am sure he would publish it. Therefore as a representative of the people of NZ (definition of pariamentarian), if he send something to one of those people he is representing (a member of the public) it is automatically public domain, unless he SPECIFIES otherwise.
If he say's it to one, he say's it to all. This would be considered true of any other politician. Remember the stolen E mails of Brash, the recordings made at aprivate national party event just before the election. Those were illegally obtained and yet considered public domain.

Re:Letter to John Reply to this message
I do not get the inference that because the email was private somehow this clears him of racial allegations. Wether it was intended to be private or public makes no difference. The content shows the author to be racist. It was his bad luck the recipient of the email made it public.

Re:Letter to John Reply to this message
why there's all this furore.. gasbags

The recipient actually admitted he was ribbing Harawira.

(jostling, joking, all in good fun?)

Harawira didn't appreciate it and cut loose. In a private email. We have our prejudices.. he made a bad call. Whoopty doo..

Re:Letter to John Reply to this message
He had no trouble with calling former Australian Prime Minister John Howard a racist *** , and although I don't like Howard personally, I think it was over the top for a visiting politician (Harawira was in Oz at the time). He had no trouble with doing a Rodney minus the apology by going on that junket with his wife.

Re:Letter to John Reply to this message
Gasbags, common sense and legislation can only go so far as to discourage racism and provide for certain behaviours to constitue an offence. There's no practical way to stop people being racist in their thoughts. If it was possible for a "thought police" to scan everyone's thoughts and lock up all those who had a thought, however fleeting, that might be racist these boards and probably most of New Zealand would be pretty deserted.

if you have a poly-tech next to farm land
there is a risk that the nearby cattle could pass tics onto the students !

if this takes place then it becomes a matter of polytics
