| Sorry yes it could have been national. It was enacted 1 December 1999, which was during Helen's watch but probably enacted by the previous government (and a bad idea!!), a long time ago to remember. Still the rest of my comment stands. |

| Cant understand why Helen Clark and so many of her followers continue to live in the past and throw it up for political gain. When can we have some real information in the public arena as to how any political party is going to promote and protect NZ Society. PLEASE we dont want to put up with a point scoring fight for the next 7 weeks, give us something positive to consider when casting our vote. |

JJ - I don't know about being a rich farmer, I do know an awful lot about working really hard and having huge amounts of debt. I also know that at the present time we have a painter / carpenter working on an old woolshed, three fencers' and a very able worker on our payroll. Hoping to be able to keep it up as they have all told us that they do not have any other work on.
Stick your anti productive, anti farmer anti anybody who actually does anything constructive where the sun don't shine - if you wouldn't mind. Yes I cannot wait until we get rid of these simpering finger pointing idiots that are "leading" this country at the moment. |

| Staying out of Iraq is not a legacy. Most countries stayed out of Iraq. Staying out of Iraq was not such a big deal, but maybe you are right that will be her legacy because there is nothing else worthwhile as a legacy |

JamisonJohn
you like all other Labour party supporters have this notion that National is only for farmers and rich people
Let me tell you any hard working person who wants to progress their own and their family's lot votes National.
Hell would freeze over before Labour started to reward those people that actually get off their backside and do something worthwhile for the country |

Hey I'm gonna weigh in on the farmer debate.
I live in the south island, where the explosion of dairy farming has lead to dry and polluted rivers. These farmers use and exploit our resources then turn around and charge us the earth for dairy products??? What kind of system is that?
I personally think a heavy dependance on farming and agriculture is not what our country needs, firstly that industry has some of the poorest spreading of wealth. The majority of farm workers and lowly paid with the majority of profits going towards farm owners.
I'm not anti that, it is a business afterall but why should we let our precious land and space be taken up by an industry that provides for very few. Also in terms of productivity and wealth per land use, the ratio is poor for farming and like I say our land is precious, we can't keep using the little space we have on low production industries.
I'd like to see this country turn around and use more land for High Tech Industries that provide more wealth and use more skills (skills which we have in abundance in this country).
I'm not anti farming, i appreciate it's place in our history but it's time this country evolved economically. |

Uhhhh all the troops in iraq are idiots anyway, they're fighting a war of profit... they're fighting to put more money in large US and UK companies like haliburton.
And yes, staying out of Iraq is a legacy! The US expected our support for this illegal war but unlike John Howard, Helen Clark chose not to sacrifice the goodwill this country has developed overseas by joining in on that glorified cash grab. |

Hi Payrol181 - I am not going to argue with you about some farming techniques being less than ideal - they are! I will say though that you might need to review your memory banks. The whole "knowledge based enonomy" was trumpeted one election campaign by the very same people who are in government now. All we heard about was how NZ was going to move away from being a producer and become "knowledge based" like say Silican Valley. Guess what ... the country and economy only started to move again when farmers started to make money after the 80's and 90's. As for not spreading the wealth I think you would have to ask any provincial business man who keeps him afloat and how much does he notice when farmers returns have dropped.
Sorry to take the wind out of your sails but it is true. |

Just for the record, I'm not voting in this election I have no doubt that both major parties aren't working for the good of our country.
I believe in personal freedoms, i believe in low taxes and open markets, i don't believe in a fire and brimstone justice system, but i believe the justice system should be fair and all people should be judged equally.
Unfortunately those things don't exist in this country... yet |

I'm not talking about farmers returns, i'm talking about the spread of wealth through your average farm... I mean honestly, do you pay people anything more than what would be considered a low wage???
Yes, when you have an economy largely based around a certain industry then yes... when that industry does well so does the economy, that's fairly obvious.
I'm not saying farming is evil, I just believe there are alot more industries that could more beneficial if they were given the proper chance.
We have alot, and I mean alot of skilled service workers that are being churned out by educational institutes around the country, but unfortunately there's not enough jobs for them, Hence the brain drain...
Farming doesn't employ the best and the brightest, it relys on the employing people with low education... why on earth should we not focus our economy towards the skills of our people?? |

| Quick question for you payroll, if you are not going to vote why are you responding on the election 08 board, although 3 out of the 4 things you believe in are National leanings so perhaps you could vote for them. As for the forth, justice is never fair due to the fact that it is administered by humans who are generally biased. |

I'm responding
A) Because I can
B) Because it interests me, I'd like to know if people feel like I do.
I'm left wing in social policies, but right wing financially... so either way i'm screwed really. |

| re the drinking age issue ... nats - guilty i think ... 1999 the age was lowered , labor - guilty also , after it was proven that the trend of drink driving accidents was on a notably shocking increase between 15 to 24 yr olds in direct correlation to the relaxed drinking laws ,labour did nothing to rectify the situation .showing that even tho they now KNOW it is damaging our society ,they prefer to continue to gather the extra tax revenue from the larger sized market that lowering the age brought about . so im placing equal blame on nats and labor for that one . |

Ouch ... I am thoroughly offended to be referred to as not the "best or the brightest" .... Thanks for that.
Actually if there were less accountants and lawyers being churned out and more doctors, dentists, vets (who actually wanted to work outside of the great Auckland), plumbers, electricians etc then the country would not only be better off but since there is such a HUGE demand for people with those skills they wouldn't bugger of overseas and would be paid good money.
I don't know how many farms you have been on recently payroll but I think you will find that the salary for good managers is $45 - $100,000 with house, power, petrol, meat and dog registration thrown in. Not bad for the lowest of the low in your opinion ey? Actually the huge dairies down in the Sth Is (who's farming practises I do not particularly agree with) are paying very good money because funnily enough it is very difficult to find good people - you know the ones you trust to look after your livestock and therefore your livelihood. |

| Helen Clark is one of the most decent politicians in the world and New Zealand should be very proud of her. She has had to work in a pathetic political environment[all decent true political types do] one in which she was stuck with Mr Winston Peters. She was spot on keeping NZ soldiers out of the madness of the Iraqi blood spilling exercise THATS A RATHER BIG PLUS AND SHOWS SHE HAS HER FINGER ON THE PULSE OF WHATS UP IN A F--KED WORLD. With what lies ahead she would be good to have around. |
