You can't outlaw it, if I travel overseas NZ money is no good I need to trade it with someone from the place I am going to with some of their money, if I can't find that person I'm screwed much easier to have money traders.

Re:Vote for Helen Clark! Reply to this message
Yeah it is because they wouldn't accept Nz dollars so our Nz dollars had to be turned into the Euro, how do you think we did that? We traded our Nz dollars to get Euros.

Re:Vote for Helen Clark! Reply to this message
currencies traders buy and sell currencies relying on fluctuations of exchange rates. converting nz dollers into euros to buy a machine aint currency trading

Converting involves trading unless you want to give the government the power to freeze the exchange rate as Muldoon did.

Re:Vote for Helen Clark! Reply to this message
its not the same. currency trading is purely speculative. you dont buy a solid asset, you buy some currency and hope it increases in value relative to another currency. you sell it when it does and buy some of the devalued currency and hope it increases in value relative to the original currency and so on

Re:Vote for Helen Clark! Reply to this message
i believe because of the huge amounts involved and the huge finance institutions that trade currencies, they could manipulate exchange rates for thier own interests

TIME! As the chair umpire calls it in tennis...
Time for Hellen and her ilk to clear the decks. Best thing that happened to this country in the last 20 years, is this mob riding into the sunset. Good riddance - don't EVER come back. Freaks!

Re:Vote for Helen Clark! Reply to this message
But we still need a way to judge the various values of other currencies against ours. Also we need someone available to exchange our currency, and forgive me if I'm wrong but don't we pay for services such as that.
Same topic but an offshoot, who are the currency traders dealing with, other currency traders perhaps, if so who cares.

Re:Vote for Helen Clark! Reply to this message
angela4funky has said it all...

People who suggest that Helen has been a good PM should stop & reflect HOW ? she is nearly always on some overseas junket. And when she is in NZ., many of the events that she appears at for photo opoptunities, are menial tasks not befitting the role of a PM. Apart from the rushed Emissions Trading Scheme, an enormous tax in disguise, and social engineering, I cannot recall her government having passed any major legislation to benefit the economy, or discourage companies from moving offshore etc. Under the present government NZ is simply closing down. If we think that NZ should keep going as we are , God help us !!.

Sure they trade with other traders but...without foreign currency traders how do you think companies/countries would pay for their imports and/or get paid for their exports ?

Some of the poorest countries in the world are those that have foreign exchange controls.

currency traders dont have anything to do with importers or exporters. they trade currencies and profit on exchange rate fluctuations

How do you think importers pay for their foreign goods ? in $NZ. ? Foreign goods are usually priced in the currency of the country of origin, eg. $US FOB. Then, they will need to arrange for a foreign currency transfer via the banking system to pay for those goods. Currency traders do not just deal in small private transactions, many are employed by some of the Global giants. Another example, NZ Treasury when they issue NZ bonds to overseas investors, those investors will need to pay in $NZ - there could be hundreds of millions of dollars of foreign exchange transactions.
