| You've been drinking too haven't you Jamie. If you give the factories to the workers how long do you think before they become capitalists, it only took 9 years for the party of the people to become the party of Helen and whatever it takes to keep her in power. |

| Perhaps we could be more moderate JJ and give the workers a share in the factory (like Tait Engineering - I think that was what it was called - does or used to do anyway). There are a couple of others that do the same and I believe they have a very loyal and hard working team. Anyone care to guess why LOLL |

| Profit sharing in a company, (does not have to be large) always motivates the workers to do their best. Also helps with staff retention. Keep the experienced workers. |

| c.pierce :dont knoiw much about it but i can see that it would not be an altogether bad thing ..or we could get big tough unions to harass companies into giving us workers more and more pay until they say "stuff it" ,close the doors and take of to Mexico where they can pay the workers $4 an hour and leave us on the dole . |

| JJ be reasonable. The company's owners are entitled to a return on their investment same as you are when you put money in the bank or whereever. If they also work in the company which most of them do they are also entitled to remuneration. I have seen you say workers are smarter than the owners (and sometimes this is true) but a really astute businessperson will hire a person with a specific talent to do a specific job so of course in some cases the employee is going to be more qualified than the boss. However that person may not have the right skills to actually run the business. I personally think the gap between between lowest paid and highest paid is way too big. We don't value the people who do all the little jobs to provide services we take for granted enough and so they get paid a pittance. They may not be rocket scientists but they do an essential job and deserve a decent wage for a decent days work. BUT how to get that without the essentials costing the earth - that is the really tricky part. |

Mike, don't know what you do for a crust.
But I am talking about skilled people, and companies that require them.
You can't fill some positions with 'slave' labour.
The cost of re-training a new person in the company I work, is about $50,000. And these are qualified people.
Imagine a staff turnover of 100 people as we did last year, just because the next company down the road offered better conditions.
Getting hard to keep up, better keep the ones you have. |

| well i was being sarcastic about the unions ..but as an employee ...i can see so much sense in NOT squeezing the blood out of the employer .... until he/she falls over and i have no job .. i am a skilled employee in my trade . i recently had a situ where a new worker i found was getting paid WAYYY above me ..i got a bit upset to say the least lol after 17 yrs service wouldn't you ? but in all sensibility i accepted a very decent pay increase ,knowing it was till less then the new guy was getting ...because i see a longer term picture . if things get tight ,he'll go first . Better something decent for a long time to come then somthing huge once then gone . shucks call me ol'fashioned |

| mikef596-- it seems that alot of employers when there are staff shortages tend to pay more to new staff then the loyal long term staff. it has been happening where i work. the new staff get better shifts often with no consideration to long term experienced staff. then the employer can't understand why the older staff who have worked extended hours to keep the place going are so peed off. all it does is increase staff turnover and you have an increasingly dissatisfied workforce that develops a antagonistic attitude towards the company and the managers. that has no benefit to both. |

I adore the intelligent and articulate postings of Labour lovers. Keeps me smiling for days.
JJ you outdid yourself with the "line them up and shoot them" reference to productive employers and other successful people - that will solve the industrial relations in this country for ever ... I can see why you have had so many jobs. If there was an award for obnoxious rabid git you would win it hands down.
You had better hope your business can withstand the recession mate 'cause nobody in their right mind would employ an attitude like yours.
Funily enough the commies in Russia tried that particular brand of wealth redistribution. How long has it taken them to see the errors of their ways and now it is "capitalism all the way baby!!" Oh and the odd organised crime ... which seems to go hand in hand with communism and post communism. China has got such a great system at the moment that some think it is okay to poison little babies so they can make a buck. You can keep your mentality JJ - I don't think you will be winning many over with your sentiments posted here. |

You are aware of course that if you work for a public company, you can simply stroll down to your local stock broker and buy as many shares in the company you want. Even unlisted companies will sometimes sell shares to their employees,
But by your post above you say "give". I think you mean a handout of shares. Now I'm sure JJ would approve of that:) |

Its news to me that China's gone capitalist. When did that happen? How come protesters at the Olympic games have to protest in a special isolated area where there are no journalists? And then they get dragged away to a re-education camp for two years even when they are in their 80s?
Must be capitalism but not as we know it Jim. |
