Our politicians let the nation down again last night when they voted to allow Alcohol advertising to continue.
We know that the alcohol industry causes between 4 and 8 billion dollars of social damage every year but only pays approx 750 million in taxes and excise.
Tobacco advertising was banned for health reason and all would agree a good thing. So why not A BAN ON ALCOHOL ADVERTISING.
Our politicians have been persuaded to support an unhealthy activity, Why, I suspect they have been brought off by big business friends and lobbyists.
This is yet another example of why business and the good of the people does not mix.
Banning the promotion of alcohol should be supported, (where are the DHB's on this issue) followed by a hearty anti-alcohol advertising program.
It is the alcohol and also the way we drink it.
Education and discouragement is needed

Well thats politicians for you Tutaki.
Grog has killed families and even communities for years.Stomped in fact on nearly every value normalcy valued.
Give me a smoker any day of the week-thats a simple addiction it debases bank balances and personal health. A smoker can go outside.
A drunk lives everywhere and in the main society loves him and promotes him.At the worst hes simply a weakened nuisance. When he beats and starves his children-well of course they deserved it didnt they-not.
Politicians and their social engineering?
Mcdonaldo is their latest promo for they are going to save us all from unemployment albeit with a government subsidy that will cost us more than the dole.
Obesity has been almost socially engineered out of sight or is it being starved out of sight?
Diabetes- well perhaps it wont be an issue now maybe it will be starved out of sight too?
The breweries? Well maybe our pollies could broker a deal with them and use the unemployed as test tasters? |

Here's a thought for you.
If alcohol advertising does really lead to increased alcohol spending then the global recession is solved. Increase the global advertising spending by 50% and we'll all be in clover again.
...... Yeah, right! |

Its absolutely absurd, how can anyone justify advertising a drug that causes 100's of millions of dollars each and every year in medical, justice and families? Not to mention they are allowed to use sprts and other healthy wholesome activities to push this vile product. The most reprehensible act has to be allowing alcohol to be advertised or to sponsor motor sports, are the deaths and maimings caused by drink driving not enough?
Oh and too bad if you are 'chemo' aptient or suffer from glaucoma because our govt in its extremely finite wisdom has canned the medical use of marijuana, something a lot of other civilised nations in the world were passing decades ago! |

| I have sneaking feeling the govts decision n this bill is based on a couple things, one, the number of shares they own in the companies responsible for alcohol import, production or advertising and two, the amount they themselves consume, they are probably all classifiable as alcoholics. |

| Well we might as well go the whole PC way and ban airline advertising because a/c crash and kill hundreds, ban car advertising because of the huge costs in medical expenses. Whu don't you pinky idiots realise that as grown adults its up to the viewer/listener to decide what he/she wants to eat, drink, drive, travel on and banning any advertising isn't going to make diddly squat difference. |

More advertising I reckon, then I could find the bargains when I stock up the fridge & booze cabinet.
Also helps the recession by getting people to spend more on the necessities of life.
But thats only my opinion |

It is clear from history that to prohibit alcohol creates more problems than it solves
People should be allowed to drink if they choose.
BUT for this industry to cause so much social damage the promotion of alcohol should be prohibited if for no other reason than it costs billions of dollars to fix the mess.
User pays means that each of us is donating approx $1000 to the alcohol industry. |

Advertising is insidious
EXAMPLE
Alcohol advertising does not encourage drinking YEAH RIGHT.
If alcohol advertising did not work the alcohol industry would not spend millions on alcohol advertising. |

No more than the morons who around around this country wanting everything banned and or laws against the most absolute stupid things.
Similar to the muppets who purport CCT all over the place stops crimes.
And of course the statement made by some of the biggest morons " If you have nothing to hide you shouldn't worry '
I suppose you all sit around at home waiting for your invitation to the next book burning.
Never mind as today is sunday so you can all pop along and hear your minister/priest waffle on and tell you how to live YOUR life. |

Tutaki,
Has banning tobacco advertising stopped the rise in smokers?
Has it stopped the young from taking up the habit?
No it has'nt, right? |

Banning tobacco advertising according the Department of Health has saved many lives and will save hundreds more over time.
There has also been a huge decrease in the percentage of the population that smoke and in those that start smoking. There is only one group (young Maori women) who continue to smoke in the same numbers as before.
So YES the ban of tobacco advertising is a success story.
Remember each of the 4 million NZer's is donating $1000pa or more to the alcohol industry so for that reason alone it should be discouraged NOT promoted. |

A response to mike-hemsley
I drink alcohol so I do not want it banned just not promoted.
I agree CCT is generally a breach of privacy I do not want that banned either just not promoted.
I do not burn books or go to religious meetings.
Again I repeat myself there are billions of dollars in social costs associated with alcohol so lets not encourage the consumption of POISON and save lives on the roads and in the home.
The number one driver of crime is alcohol ten times worse than P.
And oddly enough by banning advertising products often go down in price (this is recently reported in tobacco sales)therefore banning advertising of harmful products is a win win situation. |

Its the advertising of a product that makes it socially acceptable and desirable and in fact socially necessary for some.Advertising works or it wouldnt be so Tutaki s argument is valid re alcohol.
My belief is that if the bannining of advertising on potentially lethal products was achieved none of us would have to put up with insidious social engineering by by obtuse governments etc.
Cast your minds for eg to the insideous so not needed advertising of graphic fatal rd crashes blood and gore everywhere-those ads cost a fortune and are only preaching to the converted-obtuse social engineering .Almost a challenge for the young and useless in fact and no use to those sculling their way thru a day.
Ban alcohol advertising. |

tutaki fyi your not the moron I was referring to.How can you agree with CCT ? yet don't want it promoted. How cares if alcohol advertising works or not.i agree alcohol does imminence social damage has done for hundreds of yrs but nothing has curbed the situation.
Now I cannot remember but one of our Gvts made being found drunk in public place no longer an offence. I often wonder if this was a mistake ?
My post was rather TIC to vent my feelings at a country that seems to think regulating folk with solve social issues. It hasn't worked till now so why should it work will further censorship ? |
