| I recently went to a country music concert in Seattle. Performing were Garth brooks, alan Jackson, Keith urban, Rascal Flats and some other big American names. The thing that surprised me was that 75% of the audience of 50,000 were 30 or younger. Even the Tamworth festival in Australia or the Norfolk Island Country music festival attract the younger people. Why does country not work in NZ |

Unlike the US, NZ isnt founded by a gene pool so small(the mayflower nutters) that the current population are as mad as a maggot inbred rednecks....
But then who the hell wants to pay money to hear someone wail and yodell like they have a rather carrot shoved up their fundus....??? |

Blu, and al, you are both right ... sort of. To be honest, Garth Brooks is a little transparent for the average discerning listener in Kiwi feathers. There will be a beaut Country festival in a week or so up Kaitaia way. Probably most of the musicians attending could can Garth no sweat.
So, there is actually a strong country music following in New Zealand. Probably seen more as "Alternative Country" it has as much in common with punk rock as it does country.
It takes hold of pre-war roots acoustic country music, which was a time full of desperation. Maybe that is what made punk rockers relate to it.
Mainly it started with a band called "The Knitters", but Elvis Costello plays country too remember.
Probably the greatest new branch in music during the '80's, "Giant Sand" certainly added their worth. Today, well check out the Bloodshot Records website.
We have "The Mekons", punks who had such gorgeous vocalists as Sally Timms, Neko Case, and Kelly Hogan.
A lot of these people seemed influenced by Dylan, The Byrds and Gene Clark as well, which is wonderful.
Then there is "The Meat Purveyors" and their punk bluegrass!
Jim White, if he can be called country. Of course Tom Russll, Rodney Crowell, and the great Buddy Miller, whose wife Julie has a voice as good as Emmylou Harris.
None of these people are red-necks, in fact they are seen as a threat to the established country music thing, whatever that is.... |

Gore's a pretty wee town though, with a nice little Art collection, friendly locals and lots of open space to enjoy.
One day I hope to go back there, and the music festival would be a great excuse! |

I believe it comes from within the music industry here.
Country musicians are now reasonably smart and business savy and so it costs music distrubtors money to market country music in this country.
Now the rap and cr** artists can get signed up and exploited for very little.
Like a lot of country music fans who don't hear their music mainstream I stream my music via the internet and purchase it also via this medium. I got fed up trying to find anything other than rehashs of country in the shops. |

You guys are crazy..... meant in a nice way of course.
I grew up in the 60's in a household where 1ZB was king, the Johnny Cash show compulsory, and work started and finished before and after dark.
By the time I was a teen I HATED country and western music, Jim Reeves had my skin all a-crawlin', y'know!!
But - [ though you are largely correct al ] there is a tap-root in raw country that reaches a long way down into the folk beginnings of popular music. It is a dark windswept forgotten place that is a wonder of inspiration. Some of the Artists who have been there are possibly not truly country in stle, but style they do have, and they have it in spades. Al - next time you hear some apalling country cr4p try putting your tongue in your cheek and enjoying it as a spot of comedy....
Then, have a listen to some of the Artists who started out doing that themselves while they played for the sake of trying something different. Most have ended up being a little more serious, and making really good music, and they can surely do some mighty pickin' and a strummin' !
For instance; have you ever heard "The Meat Purveyors" or "Trailer Bride". Or Bobby Bare Junior - he can sure set fire to a guitar that young'n !
Try not to be so serious. Or just go out and buy the latest Neko Case album. It is hot! |

joes - who nose, or knows? I thought we were on about country, not C & W .. .. ..
Joe you have obviously never heard country music, or you wouldn't refer to it as Country and Western. Now go and listen to Emmylou Harris sing "Wrecking Ball", or Kelly Hogan sing"No, Bonny don't", or......I could go on for hours - which is more than you can say for many other genres of music that are currently sitting in the "Is music dead?" file. Check out Scott H. Biram or Johnny Dowd. maybe get hold of a Charlie Picket album and here him slide the mic stand all over his geeetar! Heavens to Betsy, you need some sounds to clear your head! |
