Ali, the south island is a whole nother country what was built to home all the inbred hillbillies of the tasman pacific area, it is to NZ what tasmania is for Aussie....
it also turned out to be a really good place to keep all the banjos.....lol |

I think the "Alternative" Country music is gaining an ear hear here...slowly perhaps. The Kiwi is very discerning and some of the "Old" country lays a little thin on the ground - re: the Slim Whitman of the exploding heads in the "Mars Attacks" film. There is a wonderful honesty in the country music of Emmylou Harris, Flying Burrito Brothers, and even the Grateful Dead from the days of yore that is translating to the present day. Remember the connection that Punk rock seems to have with country music, as evinced by the early work of bands like the Knitters, or Elvis Costello for that matter. To say nothing of our dear friend Johnny Cash.
Maybe check out some of the sounds by "Baskery", "Hazeldine", "Trailer Bride", John Rauhaus and Neko Case as a start. Or perhaps find the album by "Scroat Belly". I could reccomend "The Meat Purveyors" and "Moonshine Willy" - or even Bobby Bare jr. There is a lot of really great stuff being released by Bloodshot records and Sub-pop, as well as Glitterhouse, Blue Rose, and Evangeline too. Me?- I really love the music of Sally Timms, Kelly Hogan and Janet Bean. "Dragging Wonder Lake" by Janet bean and the Concertina Wire has to be one of the best "country" albums ever. Even Robert Plant has made an album with Alison Krauss. Also check out Blaze Foley - a great track on You-tube called "Oval Room'. Others are Slaid Cleaves, Caroline Mark, Waco Brothers, all straight from the gut singer-songwriters. [ Blaze Foley is dead now though; took a bullet for a friend ] There is a lot more too...... I would reccomend Bloodshot records site for a good start.

I was recently given a DVD for my birthday of Neko Case live in Austin. It is just wonderful, my word that girl can sing!! Check it out for a bit of insight into the type of country music that is gaining an influence here. |
