| The only country I listened to was Hayseed Dixie for a laugh. Garth Brookes is a knob and cross over artists like Taylor Swift and Shania Twain just give me a headache. If ya like country, that's your choice and good luck. For me, its classic rock all the way. Played bass for my mate last night while he layed down a really awsome Stevie Ray Vaughan version of Little Wing. Made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. |

Sounds sweet naff. Why anyone would listen to Garth, Shania or Taylor is way beyond me. Hayseed Dixie are a crack-up alright, but at least they can play! But to think that people who like country music listen to Garth Brookes is a bit like thinking rock fans only dig the Bay City Rollers!
Check out Rainer Ptacek. |

Hi rock,
Checked out Bernie Brausewetter and Rainer Ptacek. Thing is, from what I have heard, both the guys appear to be more blues oriented than main stream country. Way better than the normal country garbage. |

| For any budding bass players out there who want to get started - I had a mate came round to see me last night and he had a really cheapo Cort bass with a built in graphic. Reckoned it cost him $450 new. Thing is, for the price, it's bl**dy brilliant. Its not in the same league as my Ibanez, but that cost 3 times more. |

Bernie was straight blues, may he rest in peace. Rainer was just Rainer; started sorta country punk but with dobro it's gotta be bluesy. But you are starting to see what I mean, so far removed from what we knew as country for so long; which is largely cr4p but, we all should have open minds.
Check out Trailer bride, Moonshine Willy, Howe Gelb, Meat Purveyors [ they do a great song called "I'm Gonna Die In A Car Crash" ] |

| Checked out some of the bands. Apart from some of the real class blues, which I wouldn't even call country by any stretch, most of the rest of it just isn't my taste. Musically, I got dragged up by my Dad who was also a bass player and I grew up with Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, ZZ Top, AC/DC, Metallica, Rush - you get the picture. Plus some real good Odd balls such as It Bites. |

IMO She does to country music what reality shows did to
TV entertainment.
Personally if you want to listen to cold reality in the soothing tones of a country crooner listen to
Kate Melua. |

Wouldn't know what you mean, I don't watch reality shows; in fact I don't really watch TV very often at all. It's too boring.
and Neko can sing any where near as good as Kate. She writes her own songs, plays her own music, is in two or three bands at one time, including Giant Sand and Calexico. A key artist for the punk-country , alternative country movement; the whole lot of them have given country music the kick in the ar5e it needed. |

| I like the clip on you tube of Kate Melua doing "I Put A Spell On You" - it's got a bit more grunt than some of her other tracks |

yeah.. exactly what I meant
stark reality. Ground rooted grit.
I'm still partial to the fanciful notion of country music being about unrequieted love, living on the land but totally dreamy in quality.

I'm still partial to the fanciful notion that country music doesn't need electricity!
The after the harvest back porch story songs, whether they be new or old. Like the southern blues is too.
"Furnace Room Lullaby" is a murder ballad; a 'telltale heart' old style song in the fashion of the Stanley brothers or the Louvins. Good stuff! |
