You have made some errors cripplem
Working families can get food grants, can get emergency dental work and can even in some instances get help with job interviews.
Unemployed are also required to attend different courses and if refuse may lose their entitlement to benefit. If they get food grants they are not permitted to buy alcohol or tobacco
with the order,
The first thing you have to do when getting on UB is attend a three week full day job search seminar.
Its not a cruisey time being on UB, it might have been years ago but its not now and hasnt been for some time. |

| To those families on lower incomes, go to see your local WINZ office to discuss extra support you may require. There is a pamphlet explaining extra assistance to working families also. |

| What I find incredible is that WINZ will pay for almost anything, I know they pay for dental visits, groceries, cots, mattress, doctors visits, yes even clothes to go for a job interview. I have no problem with those that cannot work thru various reasons, its the ones that wont work that bother me |

I think WINZ has been unfairly used as a punching bag for a lot of people who just have a gripe with the unemployed. WINZ are there for help for superannuiants, disabled and sickness beneficiaries as well as working families.
I worked with groups of unemployed people in the job search area and out of the hundreds I worked alongside I can honestly say maybe a handful had no intention of working. They were dealt with firmly and harshly.
I have not been on UB however I have seen the sadness, anger and damage to ones self-confidence when suddenly and usually through no fault of their own they are faced with unemployment. The powerlessness is overwhelming and it takes a fine casemanager to understand the shame a lot of people feel.
So if you are one of those that instill this un-necessary guilt onto others lets just hope it never happens to you. |

| A friend of mine used to work and winz and on Tuesday night we used to go to a quiz night at the casino and without fail there would be 10-20 beneficiaries on the floor or at the pokies, the next day she would have some of them coming in asking for grants. The cost of living for everyone has gone up and most peoples wages haven't kept pace yet every week they still go off to jobs they either love or hate. Im glad winz is getting tougher as long as its on the right people, but be honest with me how many people on the unemployment benefit spend close to 40 hours a week looking for work? |

| I agree with you cripplem about the hours spent looking for work, and I would always push the view that when unemployed your job is to find a job. Knowing how to access all your resources in job search is the key, and of course in many smaller places in NZ its who you know not what you know. |

| jamie.kojak@xtra.co.nz Ive been laid off unexpectedly before, but it only took me a week to find another job, earlier this year I decided to leave my job and got four offers with even looking when they heard I was leaving. Maybe I am misinformed on the issue Ill be the first to admit that, but walking though any city on any given weekday there seams to be alot of people around that arent dressed for work. |

If all unemployed people had a city to seek work from it would be sweet cripplem, but a lot of unemployed people live in the smaller rural areas where work is harder to find.
Congrats on your determination to seek further work and succeed. |

You are probably lucky cripple. Being offered all those jobs without asking. Some people don't have the self esteem, or skills and just need a wee break. I know we are all equal, but we are not all born with equal work ethic or drive.(objectively speaking)
My Grandad, and Dad had and have allways been grafters. They worked thier whole lives through depressions, recessions, coups and all sorts, raising big families off thier wits, with no hand outs. I am cut from the same cloth. . It is in my DNA, but i think the issue of benefits, entitlements and subsidies is more complex than we could cover in a day or two.. -
I also walk around aimlessly in a pair of boardies, bare feet and a singie, people probably think i dont work, but im just down the PO Box grabbin the mail.. |

Just one last thing that concerned me was the friend discussing WINZ clients, very unprofessional. I would hope she made no direct identification to you. Severe reprimands for that behaviour in the department.
Sorry just one last thing that concerned me and that was your friend you spoke of that |

| Its not my place to dob anyone in, If people want to cheat the system more power to them. People whine about the guys at traffic lights who wash windows now sure no doubt they get goverment funding and dont pay tax on their window earnings but at least they are out doing something. If every single woman decided to become a solo mum and every low income worker decided its not worth slaving for minimum wage for 40+ hours a week what would happen? Who would pay for it all? How many people that work here on the boards can afford sky? How many state houses have sky dishes on them? Now sure not all of the will be connected but I bet most of them are. Nothing is for free someone has to pay for it somewhere but I guess there is so much pride to be had being carried though your life. |
