Yup I work, answer phones, answer emails, serve customers and post on here if time permits only eight hours a day though, and as a rule volunteer sixteen hours a week sometimes more depending on whats happening :)

The problem with this issue is many are unaware of the facts. If people such as pensioners or genuine invalids are on a benefit then the government should abide by its Social Development policy and provide for these peoples basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, medical costs and power and phone. They currently do not. The average genuine beneficiary struggles with the cost of rent and power which puts food in most cases third place or food goes to second place and power takes third place. Meaning many people cannot afford to either eat properly or keep themselves warm. Those that could recover from things like depression are kept sick by the pressure brought on by the government inability to provide the adequate funds for food or warmth...prime triggers for depression. They run a public awareness strategy that tells us to know our triggers. The best recovery from mental illness is one free of discrimination. This government discriminates against the mentally ill by keeping them sick through lack of funds. They are the main trigger for mental illness deteriorating and never healing. They place hurdles in front of the mentally ill that are avoidable. Hunger, Anger, Loneliness and Tiredness are the main causes of mental instability. The Government is guilty of causing ALL these situations to be a constant in genuine beneficiaries lives. More could recover and be contributing members again if the government stopped making them ill.

Any money used or provided by WINZ to settle debt for beneficiaries is granted as a loan and is recoverable. Another Falsehood is beneficiaries get it all for free. With rising power costs and no government intervention more beneficiaries will be forced to disconnect their power supplies as it is beyond their financial means.

just to let you all know, you don't have to be on benefit to recieve grants.. all you need is circumtances and low income etc... i was in at winz today getting help from a work broker to aid in my job search and she and other staff are telling me i am entitled to dpb but i dont want it. i felt like they were telling me claim it!!! i would rather get a job and earn my money by myself thanks.. but if i dont get a job soon that suits my availability and childcare needs i will be applying as back up for a few weeks in between... doesnt mean i am a statistic that sits on my chuff all day pondering the world and doing nothing. so quit stereotyping as if all beneficiaries are all qualified in sitting around doing nothing.

Sure their are those that sit on their butts and blidge. But I challenge any of the whingers here to spend a week working with the mentally ill trying to keep them well and cared for when the government undoes all your hard work on a daily basis. Try facing these people daily and experience their very real anguish and fear. You arrive at the position of totally despising every politician New Zealand has. These people on $140,000 a year have no idea what life is like on $8,000. It was a real dire position when National was removed from power by Labour and Labour has done nothing for nine years.

The mentally ill and pensioners have become expendable...a sad reflection on New Zealand society as a whole and one to feel absolutely ashamed of.

Benefit schmenifit!!!
I am a single dad, and running my own business to support me and my boy. I work all the hours during the day I can, so I can still drop him off at school, and pick him up afterwards. Then when he is in bed at night, I continue my work to bring in the income. I am paying a mortgage, running a house, and don't get any supprt from the lad's mum - she is oversea's. If I can do it, why can't others?
I accept that there are exceptions, but I feel the exception has become too acceptable over recent years, and the govt has allowed benefits to become too accessible.
Why reward teenage pregnancies by handing out money? Shouldn't the parents be held a little more responsible. I don't have the answers, but people do not respect what they don't have to work for.
And the UB - some people are not just unemployed - they are UNEMPLOYABLE. So why should I have to pay them to bludge?

Kiwihiker....I agree with your sentiments. I work with addicts and alcoholics and the in betweens....those that follow the treatment process should get support. Those that do nothing about their problem should recieve no support.

hi lysette, i know, i am just over the slinging matches.. i know someone who was earning over a grand a week and has most of that amount tied in bills and now theres hardly any work around and the benefit wont even cover a quarter of the amount needed yet THIS guy starts a thread going on about how beneficiaries have no right to complain about tax cuts showing no increase in payments... i'd like to see him survive a month on a benefit and see if he would moan then... or just moan about the lack of income.

Re:Im sick of hearing........ Reply to this message
it's an ongoing saga that nobody will ever fix let alone understand.. the change in government that everyone seems to be hoping for to change this will actually not stop this beneficiary laziness. john key talks like he can fix it but people have outsmarted the government for decades.. it's a no solution dilemma and i just wish people would remember beneficiaries also pay tax... there. (lol)

Re:Im sick of hearing........ Reply to this message
All the lips on rapid fire here should realise that one day in spite of their best efforts and claims to the contrary ,they may wake one morning to the realisation they can longer work for whatever reason. Then they will join those genuinely on a benefit. They will soon come to realise what that means in its entirety.....I liken it to a cycle of gradual and progressive insanity created by the government...akin to torture and those experiencing it get driven further into insanity trying to work out the logic to it all. I can truthfully say I have seen some driven to suicide.
