I'm a bit torn on this one unclenana.
While I wouldn't want to see them from the tip of the North to the Bottom of the South, I still believe they have their place - just where I'm not sure.
There are some beautiful scenes across our country which should be protected.
I do find the ones just out of Palmy to be quite graceful in appearance, but I guess that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I cannot stretch to seeing the same beauty in them if they were lined up atop the Remarkables. |

They had the same thing happen in Awhitu when they were talking about it. All the greenies in the area who were all for more green power sources suddenly started yelling "Not in my backyard!"
It has to go somewhere if we're going to use it, and it has to go somewhere windy. |

| I think they are forward planning. They do definatly spoil the natural beauty of our country and no where in New Zealand is that far out in the wops that they will never be seen but i do think it is something that should be explored and developed long before the idea of nuclear should ever be entertained. |

| Some people (like me) think they look positively beautiful and enhance the landscape; others think they look ugly and spoil it. Quite right, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and is not something that can be debated. De gustibus non est disputandum, as they say...... |

| The area they wanted to put it in in Awhitu is a bunch of erdoing hills that are sometimes used as grazing land but generally left to the weeds and weather, so it wasn't exactly a scenic reserve.. |

SZtick them along the ridge line of the Waitakere ranges, there's plenty of wind generated in Aukland.
On a more serious note, we don't have many other alternatives, most of the rivers in the South Island are already screwed up with hydro dams and what's left isn't worth using for power because of the low flows. If the govt is still keen on hydro then they should start looking at building canal systems in the North Island, there's 3 huge resevoirs up there that could be utilised, the names are Taupo, Rotorua and Rotoiti. |

Forward planning.
I think that this is something that is going to create a greener and cheaper option for us all.
Go the wind turbines! |

| Well, vampy, "a power station", does that mean one? There needs to be more power stations built in the North Island then. Majority of the population lives there then the majority of the power SHOULD be produced there. Stop pharking up the South Island landscape/environment. |

| I don't think they are anymore unsightly than the big pylons blotting the landscape, We need to get power from somewhere and the rivers just arn't copeing, I think we will get used to them in time. |

I personally don't mind how they look. They look pretty cool I reckon.
The best thing about them though id that they don't have a very permanent impact on the environment. If a new energy resource comes along (we decide to harness tidal power big time or someone invents nuclear fusion, we can take the wind turbines down and fill in the holes and noone would be able to tell where they were. There aren't too many energy sources that falll into that catergory. |

Yes, greener and cheaper. However, what no one here has been talking about is the fact that future options are getting fewer and fewer.I suggest that those people that have issues on how wind generators look, take a deep breath and start reading some serious, well informed documents on Peak Oil, Environmental Degradation and the impending US Dollar Collapse. All three of these are actually happening right at this moment. The result could very likely be global civil unrest like the world has never experienced before. And that, actually, is an awful lot uglier than wind generators on our sky lines. A tad more destructive too. Don't put our children in the position of saying to us in 20 years time, "Why didn't you do anything to prevent this nightmare"
Be informed. |

get used to wind turbines.. if Greens Leader,Fitsimons is a major shareholder in Windflow Technologies, and making millions, there`ll be more and more.
While under MMP ,with the tail wagging the dog, she`ll argue to the death against ANY power generation ,other than wind, whether its good ,bad or otherwise.....more wind, more money, more dope. |

| Dont think they're ugly. The pylons definitely are. And they're using a natural resouce to provide much needed electricity without sucking up water resources or polluting the atmonphere. Simple. |

| orange, the South Island produces enough power to sustain itself, most of the generation goes north except when the lakes are low like this year, the flow south doesn't happen often. I reckon the North Island needs a wake up call and I hope the Cook Strait cable fails soon. |
