Wahi Tapu or not? Reply to this message
http://dominionpost.co.nz/dominionpost/4718193a239 55.html

I'm curious to know other people's points of view on this issue. I can see both sides.. I wouldn't want anyone digging up my grandmother's grave to put in plumbing, but (as the comments at the bottom of the page say) the iwi who sold the lease wouldn't have done so if it was a sacred site.

hi ya vampyress!

The same thing happened in Wellington, when the new motorway and tunnel were installed so to speak, the bodies in the cemetery were exhumed and re interred, and the tunnel etc that is currently here runs right through the centre of the former Cemetery, as for exhuming and re interring bodies where we come from our plot like many others are private, so chance of that happening, it is a rural area though in the Bay of Plenty and another in Taranaki, Waikato etc..interesting post though,,thanks!

Grafton Bridge in Auckland is built over Grafton Cemetary. I think they moved a few of the bodies from where they put in the supports and offramp, but mostly it's all still where it started off. I hate it down there.

<<<<The businessman said he knew the site included wahi tapu areas when he bought his section, but that these had been kept separate from residential areas.

The wahi tapu was separated by a reserve around the lakefront and was not part of the lease, he said.>>>>

ABOVE From DP - I this is the case, then I don't know what the problem is.

There have been a lot of problems with this development. Local maori and supporters protesting and stopping builders from getting in and vandalising the area slated for development and things like that. That's why after 4 years there's only been one house built.
