Just as a note, the term POM or POMME comes from the French POMME as in Apple, a rosy apple to be precise, the English are known by the French to have rosy cheeks hence the term POMME.
As for POM it is indeed Prisoner of Mother England, or prioner of the crown, this was given to the prisoners sent to remote desert islands and Australia.
As for the Roast Beef thing, thats association, like Yanks and hotdogs. |

Sorry i wasn't meaning that they dont call us (i'm a POM) roast beef, i mean it is an association thing, us brits love roast beef.
It's the same as calling the french a croissant. or a Frog, as they eat them both. |

id be more worried about the asian invasion if i were you.
how many takeaway bars and dairys do we need. they bring there own crime with them and dont say they dont my taxes support an asian crime unit in the nz police force. at least most poms are comming here with a trade and not bringing 3 generations of usless relatives with them. |

The cost of houses is inflated 1) By greedy investors buying up houses to rent out,2) Asians immigrates.
We need more poms as their trade skills level is a lot closer to ours and at least they speak some sort of english that we can understand which is more than you say for the Indians and Asians.
Back in the 60's we complained about the poms and had punch a pom days, Then the Indians and Asians arrived and we all cried out, sorry poms oh sh&t sent us the Poms instead, |

without the immigrants nz would be in a big black hole.Think about it......ts the immigrants that are the hard workers, keeping businesses running so you lot can sit at home,drinking,beating kids and smokeing dope and p all day long. While claiming their hard earned taxes for "dole handouts."
At least the UK immigrants can speak and understand English. |

It's the ones from the South who are really snooty, arrogant and superior. Northerners are great, they are grafters.
Look at TV One, all the Shows about Poms taking over in Spain, etc and running rough shod over the locals. Yes, it's the ones from Hampshire, Kent, Buckinghamshire and those affluent places who are giving the Brits a bad rap here. Old Poms, great! |

| I agree with you.I myself am from the UK and have been in NZ for almost 3 years now. I came here to study. It has cost me $20,000 per year to study here and an extra $24,000 per year to educate my 3 children because I am not yet a taxpayer in this country.It cost me thousands to move here in terms of rent, container charges, flights etc etc but I am not whingeing here, merely stating facts! I am keen to stay and find that I have been accepted by all of the people I have met since being here. I have never been called or referred to as a 'Pom' (whingeing) or otherwise, not that I know of anyhow! People choose to come to NZ because of the similarity it has with England and because the general population is able to integrate with all walks of life much easier and better than most other countries. NZ is a culturally wonderful country with a minority who just hate the differences.There is no right or wrong it is just different and people do need to be more culturally aware and safe. If the whole world could get along it would be a much better, safer world to live in and overcrowding is not a specific problem to 'poms', 'kiwis' or 'indians' but to humanity the whole world over because people are living for longer generally. Educate and learn about the topic of this thread before posting absolute rubbish here and learn to spell people! |

| I too am a Northerner and work hard. Everywhere I have been in NZ people comment on mine and my kids accents and say nice things about us. We have more friends here now than we did in the UK. None of our friends ever judge us by the way we look, the house we live in or how much money we have (or don't have) actually! I personally have learnt alot about my new way of life here and prefer it to life in the UK anyday. The UK government really need to take a leaf out of the NZ's immigration criteria and laws books and start applying the same to migrate to the UK. The UK would become a better country to live in if they filtered out the rubbish by not letting them into the country in the first place!!!!! |
