my apologies bubble 33,
There were portugese/spanish whalers that inhabited the top half of the north island pre colonisation, trading with early Maori to Australia, and there are descendants there even today.
As for the celtic/viking debate happening, it is still a theory yet to be proven like many, so I will just follow the thread.
It was reported two days ago that the skull that was found was reportedly linked to people of the Kurahaupo Canoe, actual confirmation to be announced in the next few days.
I apologise Mozarella for hi jacking the thread!! |

Don't take yourself too seriously! I quite clearly stated that the point of this thread is to use reason and intelligence to argue your point.
If by "meal tickets" you are trying to say that if it were proven that there really was a pre-Maori people as early as 1200 AD and that if that were known then Maori wouldn't have any rights to claim anything - which is where I think you are going with that idea, then it is irrelevant because the British made the Treaty with Maori not anyone else.
Also, you didn't bother to prove that the Spanish were a credible threat to Maori.
And last but not least, a 300 year old skull does not prove that ancient Celts/Vikings visted NZ in 1200 AD.
So you see, you did deserve an F for effort! |

RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
The preposition of this thread is that the Ancient Celts/Vikings visited NZ sometime around 1200 AD as suggested by Martin Dourtre. Refer to page 1.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to use reason and intelligence to argue the point one way or the other.
I don't actually care what your point is. I only care that you make an effort to argue it.
With that in mind please observe the following rules of engagement:
* Do not make personal attacks since this only proves that you have run out of anything intelligent to say
* Make an effort to argue your point, don't just push your own agenda
* Respect other peoples opinions |

also that. fact is they were a people of many cultures and they were never and still arent one people.
they are a group of many cultures that at the current time feel it more appropriate to scheme us all through pity, that they were a people.
fact is that they would eat each other.
ask te rapaaraha who went through pukerua bay and completely enilated anything alive at pukerua pa.
he started ngati toa and now they say they are the people of the land.they stole it also. |

---RE: That Maori Pa forts are an "exact duplication of pre-Celtic hill forts"
is it , possibly ..or hmm maybe its just a common sense design . we may never know .Wish we could take a bunch of 18 to 25 yr olds from say new york .. because they don't know anything past iraq war and MacDonalds .. put them on a hill in the country and tell them they need to defend it against 80 men coming with swords and spears and see what they come up with .. that would be fun :)
oh, on the topic i truly wonder if they did visit .. and why didn't they stay or maybe they choked on a really big moa drum stick . Is there somewhere i can read about this Celtic stone? Was it brought here by some Scotsman who wanted to remember his backyard back home . |

Takitimu written by J>H Mitchell states the year 925 A.D that Kupe visited Aotearoa.
It is cetain that with the arrival of the expedition led by Toi about 1125AD the land was well colonised by some previously unknown, inferior type of people. Those wishing to solve the problem concerning the pre-Toi inhabitants must study the writings of P Smith, Dr Buck and E. Best. |
