The point of this thread is to use YOUR OWN common sense, reason and intelligence to argue your point. |

You say: "We know the Viking were fantastic sea farers and had the boats to sail across oceans. The world is still the same size now as it was a thousand years ago. How long does it take to sail from Darwin to Brisbane, then from Brisbane to NZ ? So whos to say a few happy go lucky, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn type Vikings, didnt do that in search of a magic land? If they did, but had died in the process, know one would know, apart from the stone works that survive, as possible evidence someone got here first. But didnt stay long."
But you're actually begining to argue my own point, that there IS NO evidence that they got here!
You might as well say that they sailed to Mars but nobody can prove it. |

| No no Mozarella - you've got it all wrong. The Vikings didn't sail to Mars, the aliens who built the pyramids took them there. |

| Yea I dont give a toss about treaty issues being part of this thread. I dont have stupid agendas like that. For me the thread is about, is it possible or not, for someone to get here before Moriori or Maori did. I think it was. And it could have been done quite by accident, like maybe they got lost. Well, two guys paddled here from Australia in a canoe not so long ago, If they can do that, then it only takes a week or two to sail over here in favourable conditions. The weather could have been much more settled in those times than it is today. |

| thank you tommyonions and Mozzarella, it is good to seek more knowledge even if the results differ or history for that matter, and to have them expressed as tommyonions has done. |

21st century canoeists - yes, with satnav systems, desalination units, high tech gear, dehydrated foods etc - and helicopters, ships to call on for help. And even with all that - it's still hugely dangerous - and deadly.
The evidence against pre-Maori discovery is so compelling that, to pursue it as a theory, means you have to have ideological reasons for doing so. I'm not saying you do - but the people who promote this 'theory' certainly do.
12/13th century Scandinavian or Celtic explorers who had the resources and manpower to mount an expedition of this magnitude would have been noted by chroniclers of the day.
There are NO documented cases of gung ho individualist explorers at this time - life in those days was about survival and people only survived / thrived as a cohesive GROUP. Explorers either intended to get back home or to establish new homelands; if the former, they'd tell others of their travels and discoveries on their return; if the latter, they'd start out prepared to establish colonies - which meant taking women, livestock, seeds, tools etc. |

| The Abos are well known for their marathon walk-a-bouts all over Australia, and the Vikings got into marathon sail-a-bouts all over the seas, However the Abos had to stop walking when they reached the sea, but the Vikings could just keep on sailing till they hit land, so maybe some wayward sailors accidentally hit NZ. Whos to say they didnt?. The Maoris did. How else did they know it was here. Someone had to discover it first to tell them it was here. Who was that? |

| Apparently, since humans have roamed the planet, the North and South pole used to be warm, and warm places today where freezing. So whose to say there is no evidence of human habitation or other Alien type things like pyramids yet to be discovered, under the icecaps of the south pole. Is that a possibility or not. If so then NZ may have been discovered earlier but it wasnt suitable to colonise sooner than it was. |

| the theory that maori got her after the vikings inthe 13th century is in itself totally wrong polynesians have been sailing the south pacific for 5000 years and that is proven by the discovery of lapita pottery which is found along a archealogical trail starting from japan and going all the way to the marquesas islands (tahiti) this is proof of human generatinal migration in the pacific now here is a curve ball , new zealand has over the last 5000 years had numerous eruptions do you suppose someone sitting on an island in the pacific not to mention australia and asia/indonesia saw the sky glowing at night and then said hey thats a volcano erupting mark the star its under and when it settles down we'll go there i dont think it takes a genius to figure that out especially a seafaring people who were already good ocean navigators |

| alexander the great made it all the way to the southern tip of china, alexander was a clever man all the peoples he conquered he offered them a good life if they joined him he then would study their knowledge and add it to the greek knowledge base which is why the greeks became a great people if asia had knowledge of lands that extended into the pacific im sure he would have learned of these lands it is said he stood at the southern tip of asia staring out to sea turned to his army and said were all tired let us return home to greece. but what of the soldiers who had taken local women as their wives they may have voyaged further so there is a senario to mull over |

It should be noted that the average life expectancy in the year 1000AD was around 24
So Alexander did better than average, huh?
Which begs the question... when all these Celts and Vikings took off from the northern hemisphere to get all the way down here... were they about 8? |
