I have just had to go and collect my 11 year old son from school. He has been stood down because he was letting off fireworks at school. When asked where he got them, he told me his 14 year old brother had sold them to him. That the 14 yr old and his 13 yr old friend had bought them from the Warehouse.
So I decided to go and see the 13 yr old friends mother to let her know the boy had fireworks(our sons have been friends for a while and have a mutual facination for fire which has gotten them in trouble before).
It turns out SHE was the one who took them to the Warehouse and purchased them for both boys. She didnt think it necessary to let me know and ask if it was ok to buy them on my sons behalf.
I am really disappointed in her. I think I have a right to be. I certainly wouldnt buy anything for her son that he was not the legal age to purchase himself, especially not fireworks when they already have a history with that sort of thing.
So here I am with one son stood down from school, and the other probably has the rest of the fireworks at his school because I certainly cant find them anywhere at home (I have searched the place thoroughly.
So if another parent bought your kids something they were not legally allowed to buy for themselves (and didnt even think to ask you) would you be upset?
(please note, this is more a parenting issue than a debate on whether or not fireworks should be available at all) |

| People have different ideas on what is right for their kids. The mother seems to be of the same ilk as the ones who buy R18 Video games for their 12 year olds. However you can not blame an 11 year old for letting off fireworks. It took the top spot on my wish list every year. |

The 11 yr old is just being a stupid kid. They do these things and I am just glad he didnt hurt myself.
My issue is with the other mother being so damn irresponsible. |

| I would react the same as you have. What was that woman thinking??? how would she have felt if your child had been injured by the fireworks, or injured someone else with them? |

| It really irks me... it's the biggest responsibility in life bringing up children and being the best parent one can be, and then you get thoughtless people trying to undo all the good work a parent has done. |

| Yeah it's the blame game KM. The worst kids at school allways have parents who ban other kids from hanging out with theirs. It's the guilt you know. -:) She's trying to push it ono you. Just ignore the silly cow. |

I wouldn't worry too much about her banning your child from her house, sounds like a house you wouldn't want your child to be at.
In your position I would have been furious |

I agree with you there burns, however that doesn't absolve the adult who bought them for a minor.
personally I think they should be banned, public displays only |

Get over yourselves...its fireworks...she didnt buy drugs...she didnt take your little precious brat to a massage parlour (which he'd have loved probably)...
...some crackers and so what??....
...if you raise them with this much stifled authoritarianism you can bet they will rebel at 15 and you'll have a real handful.... |

The point ace is this
I am the parent. The issue is not fireworks, booze, drugs, alcohol strippers or hookers. The issue here is that I am his parent and he is underage. He also has had issues in the past with 'facination with fire'
He also gave/sold some of those bought for him to his 11 year old brother who took them to school and let them off.
I AM THE PARENT! I am not against 'a few crackers'... but I consider it my responsibility to make sure my kids are safe, and other peoples kids, animals, property as well. It is not for another parent to conspire with my teenagers because they have different standards.
AND Ace, you have no idea whether or not I have bought fireworks for my family to enjoy. But I certainly haven't bought them, handed them around all the neighbourhood kiddies and told them to let them off anywhere and everywhere with no concern for other people, school regulations, animals or anyone/anything else.
So Ace, if you have kids of your own and havent managed to kill them yet through your own carelessness, negligence or plain stupidity maybe you should get off the internet and try looking after them so I dont have to pay for their lifelong ACC bills or prison accomodation. |

I agree with you.
When my youngest was 14 or so his mate's mother bought alcohol and cigarettes for them. She was surprised when I told her what I thought of her ! |

So the Mum went shopping to the warehouse and brought fireworks?
And your son was with her? (I assume you knew your son was with her.)
Though I feel for your case, it really sounds a bit dodgey. She, the adult purchased fire works, then her son and your son take possession of them and sell them to your younger son???
This is clearly a case of share responsibility and I don't really see the blame lying with the parent.
Now if the adult had given the kids a load of cash and sent them off by themselves then that would be different.
Seems like these naughty boys took advantage of the situation. And now in our pc society the adult is being blamed. Give the kids a belt and then ground them and they will learn their lesson! |

Toks.. are you aware it is now illegal to sell fireworks to anyone under 18?
Without the mothers help, they could not have got hold of fireworks in the first place. |
