| This is totally normal, all my dogs have done this. They usually do it after they have had their baths or they just need to let off their excess energy. I have to say that in these instances you do need to take control otherwise you may have the situation where she might bite someone. The news paper trick is good. Grabbing the dog when she does this telling her no and then giving her a time out is always good. Put her in a room by herslf with no toys ( I use the laundry) and then leave her there for 10-15 mins. |

| a dog's short term memory where it associates it's action to a consequence is extremely short. 20seconds maximum. so when you punish a dog for an action that it has done after that intial time, it does not associate it with it's unwanted behaviour. just like when people give their dogs hidings when they get home and find the place in tatters. all the dog knows is that when you got home, it got a hiding. And the next time you come home and find the place in tatters, the dog cowers away. why? because it learnt that it got a hiding last time you came home. One's spurt of anger only satisfies themselves, but does nothing to address the unwanted behaviour |

Hitting is the least effective way to correct, and creates a dog that is more likely to bite a stranger or child when in a stressful or fearful situation
Your hands should be used to praise, comfort and provide pleasure when they learn only that they have less fear or worry about another person touching them and won't feel threatened someone swing toward them, for example a newspaper boy handing you a newspaper or has worry if a toddler goes to hug the dog. For dogs that have learned hands or swing arms can cause pain there is a greater chance that they will react defensively and potentially bite someone just because of how they view the arm movement. |

| No still, never ever thrashed any of my dogs, as this will break their spirits. Once you have done that your dog is a lost cause. Im a very loving pet person. I let them know who was the boss with out the thrashings. Oh they were all bought up with cats too. We have Meg and two cats. They get on like a house on fire...... well sometimes lol. And the cats were quite old when we intoduced Meg into the family. |

good question iflplanning!!
a question that most people have trouble answering!
The only safe way to pull two dogs apart during a fight without getting bitten yourself, (two people are needed for this one), is for each one of you to get behind one of the dogs, grab their hind legs, lift them slightly off the ground, and swing the dogs around! them being lifted into the air and swung around makes them let go. then seperate the dogs until the situation has calmed down... |

| They cant bite you if you have their hind legs in hand? Or is it possible that they may perceive this as another attack and launch at you? |

exactly andrew!!
The philosophy that i learnt, and pass on to every dog owner i meet, is:
EXERCISE, DISCIPLINE, AFFECTION.
In that order. That is all a dog needs in life to be happy, stable, respect and love you.
A minimum of 45min walk/run everyday(sometimes twice a day for the breeds with never-ending energy supplies!), discipline in the form of obedience, schutzund, herding, agility, whatever you or your dog is into, then affection.
Affection can be expressed through playing, feeding, and more importantly, just spending good old fashioned time with them. |

| Yep spending time training the dogs is all it takes. When necessary and only once have i had to hit my dogs(rotti) and lab with a newspaper. That was for the rotti being very agressive to the pup. They are always happy to see you and love us all. They know the pecking order no need to lay into them. |

| That's what the swinging motion is for. Just calmly approach, reach out and grab them(without being forceful) and then swing them around. the centripetal force will keep their heads away from you. it only takes a little while for a dog to calm down(less than a minute). If your dog respects you, they will stop as soon as you come on the scene/ they see that it is you that is holding them |

| I found rotties and any mastiff breed to be the most loyal and easiest to train. Like every one has said, just takes time and paitence and a lot of loving. Oh and the exercise :) |

Yep
My first rotti was a dream show/ask and on 3rd time did it. I was spoilt with her as the next girl was a bit head strong but we got there in the end. Yep lots of exercise as they go mad when i put my boots on and grap the leads. |
