That sounds like the 6 month old lab to me.
Renamed him Havoc because of the mess and chewed things every day.

it is down to the responsible owners who pay the fees and i bet take the plastic bag for the dodos that are the minority.

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
tried the 'pull them apart by back legs'. doesnt work and have seen one spin around and latch onto the person holding the legs. The only way is to put a hose down its throat so it has to let go or drown.

Obrienke must be the Lab that comes out in our dog as well. She is part mastiff too. She loves water so that would be the lab. She also loves been vacummed with the vacume cleaner. Absolutley loves it, stupid dog lol. She is very beautifull to. Have a few people asking if they can put their bull mastiffs over her. Shes jet black.

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
So the consensus is that bad dogs are caused by bad owners 95% of the time. Unfortunatly the laws that are being brought in affect everyone and the 'bad' owners are the ones who don't obey the laws anyway? Neat to have a dog behaviourist on the thread and neat to hear all the different opinions on training methods flowing backwards and forwards.

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
ours are a hunting team, they are a blend of terriers as bred specifically for the job [bully/staffy/pitbull/ame rican bully].
One of the pups has thrown back to a black lab grandparent and he is gorgeous but as with all pigdogs, they are not pets. The are affectionate, playful, mischievious, lovable and no threat to people [except the old fella] but they are in a constant struggle to be the top dog and consequently, they fight.

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
looking at some of the attacks over the past few years ... some are not surprising such as when 2 wandering dogs of dubious breed attacked a kid walking ... sort of reverting to the wild pack mentality going on there ... the one when in wellington ,i think it was, that just randomly went the two year old .. this sort is unpredictable ... .. Do you guys think that perhaps the keeping of "some " breeds is just simply not necessary ?

i guess im referring to breeds that have a history of being cross bred for the purpose of fighting or killing? is there really a justifiable reason for an average city dwelling family to keep such a breed for a pet . or would they be beter to get a breed that has been bred to be "a Pet"

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
Im no expert, but I think all dogs will fight. Its just their make up. We find male dog around here with our female, sweet as, but dog plus dog equals trouble(not always) I have seen two female dogs together, one minute there are fine, they next they at it harry hard out.

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
yes well bad dog bad owner and now its about time we made it harder for these people to own and breed such a loyal and trust worthy companions. ( I know it would cost alot but if we nuetuered all dogs, It would stop half breed giveaways that no one wants. I feel if you are not responsible you probably wouldnt pay for a vaccinated, etc well breed dog from a registered breeder. it just makes it harder for irresponsible people to blame someone else for there dog biting someone. do we put down humans that cant be rehabilitated ????????

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
Even pet breeds can attack.
Of our lot, never had a problem with the terriers, but the adorable beardy lost it big time.
Pitbulls reputation is a product of the media. The are generally very affectionate and smart. If they are used to hunt or encouraged to fight though, i wouldnt take it home for the kids.

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
rufjak :- re bred specifically for the job ...pig dogs ..

THis i understand completely .. they are bred for purpose and given opportunity for that purpose .. iv also always found owners of pig dogs to be fairly responsible when it comes to letting a dog thats bred to hunt &hold ,wander around the local streets ... haha i think that maybe because a really decent pig dog can fetch some decent dollars

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
haha yes they can , my foxy cannot ..I refer to her as "the cat" you can stick your hand down her throat and she will gaga and still not bite .. but thats a bit rare .

but even tho smal breeds acan attack and nastily at times ...its the capabilty to kill a human in 60 to 120 seconds --- the breeds with the strength to do that are the ones im referring too... why should a city dwelling family have a powerful dog of a breed that was intended for fighting and killing .. as a family pet ..

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
ouh i missed my point haha .. yes the media sensationalizing everrrrthing... but the one difference in the attacks of diffeent breeds ..which are over al rare .. more peps get attacked by other peps then dogs for sure .. but whyen the local foxy goes a kid the kid gets a stitch or 17.. (speacially whyeh they stick thier face through a hole in a fence antagonizing the dog ) but when a large strong breed attacks (like the pitts.. children end up almost and sometimes ..Dead .

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
People tend to let small breeds (foxy, jack russel, chihuahua) get away with a lot more behavioural and temperament problems because they are small. I have a foxy, older and was not well socialised, she bites. Now if i see children coming up the drive (live on a farm, long drive) i immediatly put her away. HOWEVER, when i have her out in a public place on a short lead well controlled, why do people insist on trying to pat her? Because she is small and cute? even when i tell them to leave her alone and warn them, they can still try and pat her as they don't take her seriously. Now maybe there needs to also be some education in the general public about dogs?

I appologise for touching on several different issues in this one post!

precisely. Don't take her out anymore because of that. She always apologises after the event though! (big brown eyes looking at the floor, will sometimes come back with a lick or too)

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
my neighbor used to let my foxy in their house all the time ,even call her over ... id go to leave , she travels in the van its her 2nd home (she will chew my clothes in protest if i leave her at home haha )..id have to go hunt the dog down because they started closing the door so i'd call her and see her scratching at the inside of the nextdoors ranch-slider haha .. (dognappers!..) so i went over and asked them if they wish to supply a years petfood and could they please pay the registration too and i'll be sending them a vets bill if she needs to visit ... she doesnt seem to be welcome there anymore

vionaandmichelle@xtra.co. nz : Im afraid I would have to dissagree with your statement about getting rid of half breed give aways. The dog we own is a half breed and a give away on trade me. You couldnt ask for a better and more loyal dog. The kids love her dearly and she loves then back..... I think lol.

I agree.... both ours are half breeds and although not the smartest of the bunch, a truly loyal and loved part of the family.. Even if they do eat the tangelos off the tree... And the washing off the line...

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
My Staffy cross charges around the place like mad when he wants to let off steam, but doesn't nip or bite. My Mum's lab/spaniel cross has bitten children a few times; our Staffy is very tolerant of kids and only nipped (lightly) once when both he and my son were getting over-excited and my son decided that kicking the dog repeatedly in the head was a good idea - the dog said "stop it" in dog-speak before I could.

I think half the problem is that when Staffies, etc. bite, they can do a lot of damage, so it makes the news. Soft-mouthed dogs like Labs bite more often, but it doesn't do the same damage.

Re:When dogs attack Reply to this message
I also think that when dogs do nip, they tend to know its a nip. They know they could do alot more damage if they wanted to. Our dog has never snapped at the kids, if it did, bye bye doggy. You cant really trust a dog that has snapped at your kids. Like getting the taste for sheep, once they got the taste its hard to stop. Comes down to whats more important ? Your kids or your dog. But like I said, our dog puts up with alot from the kids and she just lies there. Hell they try and ride her like a horse. Her tail just wags harder and harder. Its like shes saying,"Wow Im getting attention" LOL
