beaumulligan...oz is not better off!!! You like to hibernate within your ethnocentric bubble and blab quotes from kiwis whom obviously have been culturally displaced and have no idea what being Maori is.

There are two typical cultures...the urban ised maori and the rural maori both of which are worlds apart. The u/m has no real foundation/upbringing of what this means and is one whom stands by and is very recognisable by the choice of words they live by ie "Those maoris are still fighting over their land" "oh I hate being maori"....The best being....."I'm a kiwi not a Maori, we should all be kiwis!! In comparison to the r/m whom lives by and breaths the very essense of 'Maori'. 'how can we retain our land and conserve what is ours for the upcoming generations"
Too many people have seen 'once were warriors'and compare the rest of us to that tid bit instead of the truth;;;;which is....Once our people were warriors and that is why we still retain most of our land and heritage. And why we are so pro active in order to preserve our identity as a people.

Yes we all have a choice and miraculously the minoroty of us whom live and enjoy life here in NZ are previledged.

maximus and sijay; It's a pity that those knockers sitting offshore have forgotten the ancient saying "those who live in glass house shouldn't throw stones". Lets hope they have forgotten how to get back here and remain wallowing in their very own self pity where they are.

Re:Is New Zealand Really This Bad Reply to this message
Anyway... back to the point of the discussion... when you live in a country it's often hard to see how different it is and how it's changed over the years. We moved here about ten years ago having lived in the USA, UK and Australia. It was always our intention to live back here eventually for what we perceived as a better lifestyle. we are worse off financially now than we have ever been in our lives. The rise in costs has been phenomenal (38c per litre for petrol ten years ago) especially on mortgages. Jobs are no longer as secure as they used to be (between us we have 5 redundancies in 10 years). There's no doubt this is happening worldwide - not peculiar to NZ but let's not pretend everything here is a fantasyland. There is no tax free threshold - so young kids earning money from paper rounds have to pay tax; the legal system definitely favours employers - on the other hand my elderly mother would move over here in a heartbeat because when she was visiting last year she was treated so well by kiwis of all races and cultures and treated with respect. However NZers do need to look at criticism constructively and not see it all as a bagging job - after all they're not shy on giving it back.!!

Re:Is New Zealand Really This Bad Reply to this message
Gumby, very true words. Everyone of us who have posted on this little forum (funny how quickly it has grown) has experienced a variety of different aspects on New Zealand life. I love my country with an absolute passion. I've served my country, at home and overseas but have found that on the majority of issues (at this present time and no reflection on what New Zealand was and may be in the future) the lifestyle overseas is more aligned with what I want to achieve personally.

That sad fact remains that the majority of workers in New Zealand dont earn enough to live a comfortable lifestyle. A two income family is still deemed to be borderline poverty line and able to claim all sorts of benefits. This shouldnt be allowed to happen. New immigrants to NZ are entitled to more allowances and benefits then full term Kiwi's (and no I'm not a xenophobe). Again this also shouldnt be allowed to happen.

Basically what it boils down to is this. If you want to make money and live a very comfortable lifestyle where ambition and drive to succeed is not hampered then you must go overseas to do it. However if you want a stress free (mostly) laid back lifestyle then yes NZ could be the place to find it.

mrpham; One would have to wonder how you ever got to fit into Canadian society. The show of anger in your last blurb doesn't make you any better than those you abuse.

Your way out of touch Nicole, you may have once lived here but clearly dont now if you think Oz is anywhere near the P soaked dump that NZ has been allowed to become. Per Capita is a misleading term which often suits misguided claptrap such as your own. Thing is Oz is just so beautifully wide open with space for all to actually choose their enviroment. Not so little ol NZ where decent, law abiding citizens are forced to live the indignity of being stood over and intimidated by brain dead street filth every time they step out the door.

Re:Is New Zealand Really This Bad Reply to this message
Hey,beaumulligan, now hang on minute. Not everyone who has made New Zealand their home wants to quit and go to Australia. I came here with my family 32 years ago and became a New Zealander after 3 years. This is my home. I have been back to the UK on many occasions to see my relatives and I visited the USA and Australia on many visits. This is a beautiful country, sure it has it's faults and the present government is not helping to eleviate them but on the whole I know where I would sooner live. And NO I am not wealthy money wise I have only got the government pension to live on but I am wealthy in a lot of other ways. So stop knocking the country remember the words of John Kennedy. "Ask not what your country can do for you but what can you do for your country"

beau; Your way out of touch with the real world. If the statistics on the aborigine were included in Oz's overall figures then your new found green pastures would rank as one of the worst on the planet. And the only time per capita does not work is when it's denied by the country, and the people in it, that it affects most. Wide open spaces ?; yeah sure, just as long as there are no aborigines on it.

I totally agree with you. Although Im exercising my right to move overseas for more money due to being unhappy with life here in NZ. Also, theres an old saying; It doesnt matter who you vote for, the govt always gets in.

when i was on my OE and living in the UK i decided that when it was time to start a family i would come back to NZ. i couldnt imagine raising kids without access to beach picnics and bush trails, of which there are none in london. now, with loser parents stuffing their precious babies into dryers, people getting killed in car parks and a decent loaf of bread costing nearly 5 dollars, im begining to think that there are more important things than a nice beach.

Re:Is New Zealand Really This Bad Reply to this message
xtr you appear to be rather dumbed down which is understandable given the warm fuzzy spin Uncle Helen puts on the capitulation of an entire country to an agressive minority rideing the PC wave all the way to the brown bank.
Here in Oz thankfully a snot nosed, fly blown drunken abo is allowed to be recognised as just that(not pandered too, given taxpayers money for more grog and P and set up in a nice home).
Over here if it looks like an animal, sounds, smells and acts like an animal it is treated as such. Now i know thats gonna infuriate the do gooders so cool! Stay there where you can assist in the disintegration of a once lovely country, turn a blind eye to the facts which show (PER CAPITA) that maori, island and asians outnumber whites on a massive scale in all things criminal.
Always makes me laugh how your sort whine about prison populations having such a high non white population, like its some kind of discrimination!!Always neglecting to acknowledge thats its only because they commit 75% of the crime.

Hey remember Chloe from Wainuiomata, that is the type of trash that "Welfare New Zealand" produce. She was caught shop lifting up north somewhere which you cant blame her for that behaviour because the state has taught her everything is for free. Its an honest person who dosnt consume more than what they have produced.

Re:Is New Zealand Really This Bad Reply to this message
As of 19 June my husband and I have been in New Zealand for 5 years. We moved here from a U.S. mid-western state. I did glance at the website, but preferred not to go to far into as I really try not to read bigoted opinions. My husband and I totally love New Zealand and have found the people (no mater what color their skin may be) to be helpful, friendly and fair. Sure, there is the odd person or two who are rude and unfriendly, but I dare you to go to any country in the world and not find that. New Zealand has many, many beautiful things that have made us fall in love with NZ and made us realize that we found "home." A friend of ours called a few years ago from the States. He asked "When are you two coming home?" My response "Jon, we are home."

In the U.S. we have a very old (somewhat southern) saying...Love it or Leave it....and I honestly think that applies to the author of that bigoted site. Should you not enjoy the wonders of this gorgeous country, no one is stopping you from leaving (I really have no idea if that person even still resides here, because I became so disgusted with what I did read, I went no further). There was a commericial on TV here a few years ago with the refrain of "You don't know how lucky you are.." From someone who has done extensive travelling and lived in many parts of the U.S., trust me, that is so very very true for this country!

Re:Is New Zealand Really This Bad Reply to this message
gramsngrampsx2, you have raised my suspicions anyway, why would you move from a country that is one of the most free in the world to a left of left socialist heading towards banana republic. Socialist regimes have always ended up facist after time as happened in Germany and nearly in NZ with Rob Muldoon. Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserves neither liberty nor safety.

Re:Is New Zealand Really This Bad Reply to this message
Jerry, I am not sure how I "raised your suspicions" but, why did we move? I did not in any way put down the U.S. or any other part of the world in my posting. I love the U.S. and will always consider myself an American. First though, before you slam anything I may say, I will be the very first to admit, I'm not political. I do vote and I do consider myself informed, but I have always (in the U.S. and here) voted for the people I believe will do best for the country, no matter what party they may represent. Do I agree with everything the present government of NZ stands for? No. Nor do I agree with all the things that the U.S. government at this time stands for, that is the freedom that I have had in the U.S. and here. I do not have to agree with what politicans say, if I disagree I have the right here and in the U.S. to say so. I don't have to fear retilation. But, in my posting, I did not consider it to be political. I just wanted to point out to the people who slam NZ and say what a horrible place it is (as in then web site author) that in my belief he is wrong. That is my right. And please, do not say that Americans are the most "liberated" people. It simply is not true. Yes, Americans have freedom of speech (in most matters), but last time I checked, so did NZ. Why do we live here than in the U.S.? Our reasons are numerous but one of the top one's I guess would be because NZ is LESS violent. I lived in a very small town in Missouri (midwestern US) and even there violence was an everyday occurance. I am not saying though the the US is bad, but I feel safer here one, two the beauty of NZ spoke to my soul (I know, one of those cliches that you don't like) and for us, the country itself has brought us much happiness. And no, before you question, we are on no type of benefit nor are we rich. My husband is a teacher so I'm sure you can understand the no rich part :) I hope this has enlightened you about why we are here.
