So what looks better on a job application?
I didnt have a job so i got a job at McDonalds...
OR
I've been on the Dole for........
Most people know it's easier to get a job when you have a job. Right you might be flippin burgers at McD's but atleast it shows potential employers that you can get out of bed and go to work, it shows them that you want to work. |

| When it was suggested that university's accept more law and accountancy students the idea was scorned by law and accountancy firms all over nz.It would increase competition lower prices and therefore (according to these firms) lower the quality of service. As these same self centered pratts pretty much own parliment the suggestion went away. |

| No offense, Id sooner be seen as desperate to get a job, than lazy on the dole. If you are physically and mentally able to work, I cant see a valid reason to not be working... |

It is a well known FACT that many people who work in Mcdonalds and similar places need to have their incomes topped up by winz as most are hired on part time contracts and only work when rostered on or called. The shifts are not regular and you must be available when ever they call.If you don't get enough work during each week you must go cap in hand to winz, who will go through your finances before giving you any help.
This is degrading and evil.
Winz is taking the taxpayers money and using it to subsidize companies who abuse nz workers and send their huge profits overseas, all in the interests of keeping wages low.
So,if you are working for someone now and you are finding times tough,mortgage/rent,power ,petrol, food, you could ask your employer for a raise, perhaps his/her answer will be IF YOURE NOT HAPPY HERE YOU CAN ALWAYS GO WORK FOR MCDONALDS!! |

Id be happier knowing that my tax is being used to top up the earnings of a low income earner who is atleast attempting to work, rather than someone who just cant be bothered trying to get a job..
"Winz is taking the taxpayers money and using it to subsidize companies who abuse nz workers and send their huge profits overseas, all in the interests of keeping wages low."
Mentally and physically able people are taking the taxpayers money to subsidise their lazy existence, abusing NZ workers all in the interests of what?
I understand your point sylke, my only issue is with those who are able to work but choose not to.. |

| I understand why people work at Mcdonalds etc, the pressure to take a job no matter how badly you are going to be used is enormous. My heart goes out to these people.Lets also not forget cleaners resthome workers and many many others in this same predicament, they all deserve better! However, their situation will never improve while we not only allow, but encourage winz to force people into these abusive situations |

| Often by choosing not to take the imitation jobs on "offer" from winz these people suffer badly, both from financial stress and social ostracism, However they may feel more able to look at themselves in the mirror each morning, this self respect is very important and is largely what is missing in our society.I honestly believe that most people want to work and will work given a fair wage and some respect |

| Either way, any solution is going to be taxpayer funded, training, retraining etc etc. This is a gross generalisation but I would imagine the percentage of those on the unemployment benefit who have qualifications over and above those kind of jobs would not be high. So do we fight abusive employment situations by leaving people on the Dole? Do we train these people at cost to the taxpayer while the taxpayer still provides their income? The problem costs the tax payer, the solution costs the tax payer, and the only that benefits from any of it is the guy who was to lazy to get a job in the first place.. |

| Just woindering why your heart goes out to workers who are cleaners or work in resthomes.. i have done both these jobs and with pride.. if these industries were not there who would look after our elderly who had no family and couldnt look after themselves anymore .. as for cleaners would you rather walk into a shop that is clean or one that is filthy because they dont have a cleaner both these jobs are good honest earnings |

I think the comment was aimed at minimum salary as opposed to the type of work. If the minimum salary was more realistic and created a much larger gap then the dole people would be more enthused to find work. But even then their will be those that simply won't work.
There are also the people on benefits doing cash work earning more than many people on salaried jobs. I'm on invalids and during my well times I am able to work and during those times I ask WINZ to put my invalids on hold. (I don't have to do that either, on invalids I'm allowed to earn something close to $5,000 yearly I think.) |

| And I can relate to those of you that comment about pride. I feel great when I can get out and work again - even if only for a few months at a time. Its good for the soul and I look forward to the days when I am completely independant again. And I don't take my invalids support for granted. Neither to I cash in on other disability support. I get the minimum and make do and thank my lucky stars that I live in a country that supports the sick. |
