What an interesting thread. So many different opinions, what really gets up my nose are those who are on DPB and live with their partners A woman of 3 gets $520 a week thats more then the average wage earner, alot of them dont put the fathers names on the birth certificates only because its money being taken out of their own pockets, so what gives them an incentive to get off their butts when getting that much money. They ll just keep popping out babies for even more money.

I pay taxes for a system that was put into placec to help those who need it and i would rather have winz than see people sleeping on the streets either alone or w their family. Some take it for granted but the majority use it as a stepping stone to something better. Winz employees need to be accountable for benefit fraud and the well being of their clients. If a case manager has had a client on the UB for a year the answer is why??? Either the case manager is jst gvn out handouts or the client has the CM wrapped around their finger..either way winz is supposed to help empower their clients not just hand out cash

For a family of 3 $520 aint much. Rent avg of 280 pwr aprox 40 food aprox 100. Total420 n that doesnt include gas, ph, clothing and if you really look ul see theyre wont be family holidays, weekend family outings, labelled clothing or the "luxury" life beneficiaries seem to "Have". If Winz thinks clients are abusing the system, then they should do their job and help empower their clients to move forward not jst renew an application and put it in a folder waiting for the next review. Keep in contact, follow up on attendances at interviews or courses.
Winz needs to do their job and help people help themselves

$520 is just what the beneficiary gets plus her partners income from working so in theory their weekly income after tax is $1200 where all the kids run around in pumpkin patch clothing so ask yourself whose ripping off who? You have the genuine beneficiaries and u have the others that constantly rip the system and tax payers like us off, the 1s I do feel sorry for are those beneficiaries who are tainted with the same brush and they are the genuine 1s that do need help not these 1s who just keep having babies or just dont want to work, y work when u get payouts left right and centre!

i was on the invalids benefit for over a year, it was a real low point, the feeling of being less than equal and not paying your way in society was overwhelming, somedays i couldnt bring myself to work down the street, however, through this low point i had access to courses i never would have had the time to do. Now i own a small business, I dont begrudge paying taxes if someone else whos in the same boat as i was can get out of their rut, dont forget, theirs not much difference between a govt handout and an employer hand out.

Re:tax payers fund benefits Reply to this message
Ill tell you what frustrates me,is that people on the DPB can get study for free, WINZ pays for it, mean while I have a $40,000 loan for mine (paying back at $95 a fortnight). Some people on the DPB had no choice in their circumstances (S.I.L partner died when she was 5 months preg) but it still annoys me. Good on the women and men getting out there trying to get an education to get a decent job, to eventually get off the DPB, but why am I paying for my education and they don't?? One thing I have to admit is that you have to pay back anything that WINZ pays for (power bills, phone bills etc) been there done that (many years ago), but they would not help me when my job stopped for the summer (8 yrs ago)because I was a reliever and I could not get a full time job because study started again in Feb (6 weeks later), they told me to go to my parents and ask them for the money to pay my rent, so I told them where to go. Why aren't parents who are working not offered help with childcare fees, they aren't cheap, where as parent/s on a benefit get a min of 9 hours a week, and if you have more than one they can offer you up to 40 hours, and these parents don't work or study, (granted everyone needs a break), but wheres my help working 40 hours a week with a 3 year old. I know how hard it is to live on a benefit, but I am sick of paying for others that are on the benefit who won't help themselves. (pension and disability excluded)

I think the fair thing to do re the study is have WINZ pay for it but then if the person doesn't go off the benefit and return to the work force (as per the intention of study) then the fees should be deducted weekly from their benefit.

jodz I could be wrong but I am fairly certain that you can get winz support like childcare. Its called working for families. Might be worth asking. 0800 559 009 is the call centre number. Good luck!

Toke, kinda agree with some of your comments, I am guilty of working 50+ hours, only because bro and i are self employed and choose to, for business growth blah, blah, blah...., and i agree that people on invalids/ pensioners deserve to live with dignity.

But, I disagree with the abuse from a minority who choose to live off WINZ. A family man like you Toke, raised/ raising a family and living sometimes close to the poverty line, my perception of poverty anyway, have had my eye's opened lately, by the desperation of our local pensioners here in Melbourne, and how little they have, just surviving on $50 sometimes less after living expenses, a community group here have started "Adopt a Pensioner" where we go over to our elderly neighbours and offer transport to shops, repairs around the house, repairs to car, food etc...remember this happening back in the 70's wen we were kids, too many folks relying on the govt to fix things and pay for things.

Wtih fuel cost going up, food and everything else that govt can tax, now is a good time to start looking toward community programmes and getting the unemployed, Solo parents some kind of goal or sense of worth in our communities, like the "adopt a pensioner" thingee ova here, 1 suggestion, who knows the possibilities aye Toke???

Re:tax payers fund benefits Reply to this message
and as taxayers, we also have to repair damage done to our properties by taggers/vandals, who dont realise that we support their lifestyles.

they should be educated that the middle class fund them, and show us some respect.

also, homeowner rates subsidise the buses. any beneficiary taking the bus is getting a double helping of goodness from the people hey despise as more fortunate fortunate.
