imagine what benefits could be paid out if those "white collar crims" did pay all their taxes....heck we could afford to pay the unemployed "holiday grants" too, maybe an overseas trip once a year....
That's sarcasm in case you thought I was serious! |

| Yeah and even better than holidays, if everyone paid honest taxes then more jobs could be created and we might not even need an unemployment benefit. Now theres a thought. |

| The debate on this tread has been brisk. There is aneed for welfare for THOSE IN GENUINE NEED. Circunstances are such that we make decisions on whether we CHOOSE to have 6 children or NONE. The talk of White collar crime versus benefit fraud. Both go to jail and WE TAX PAYERS feed, cloth and keep these criminals at a cost of 125,000 a year.not a number plucked from the air but one who knows from WORKING in the industry. |

| I think you missed the point...........its not about people on benifits paying tax. Rememeber your $277.00 is all from tax payers money.......you just returning some of your tax payers benefit back. Its a cyclic government process of keeping money in the system and taxing on already taxed income. |

| pagan - you sure are one shallow mamm! You don't even know what `my circumstances' are or how much tax I have contributed to the government without choice. I sure haven't sat on my ar%e doin nothing - as a teenager I put every cent into my flying career (I've never borrowed a dollar lady), I built my own business, starting from scratch and then my health turned to s*#t. Now I'm working my darnest to get a job, so what benefit are you talking about lady, do you put us all in the same basket - cause I'm not on the dole and sure as hell DON'T WANT to be on ANY benefit lady!! |

I know a lady in her fifties thats on unemployment and every week she applies for many jobs (as per the criteria of unemployment) she lives in a small rural town and quiet honestly shes almost unemployable. She couldn't do manual work and shes never done clerical work (husband supported her). She genuinely struggles to even communicate and I wouldn't want to employ her. Thats the other side of the issue. Finding employers that want to employ the non-employable. Stuffing envelopes etc would be great if she could afford to move and get a job in the city. I share this simply as an example of the reality of how difficult it is for some people.
On the other side of the coin the same town has a load of gardening work available and no one wants to do the work. Thats where WINZ could kick some butts of the healthy able bodied people and train them up in gardening / lawn mowing and help them get started. |

| Problem with white collar criminals ripping off the system, is they cost us money now, and to punish them costs us as well, taxes pay for the upkeep of prisons as well.. Sickness benefit, If your on it and sick theres no problem, Invalids benefit, If your an invalid and can NOT work, theres no problem, Unemployment Benefit... well whats the deal, If there is a valid reason for your inability to work you should be on the appropriate benefit for your circumstances, so really the Unemployment Benefit should only be something that people of able body and mind can attain when due to circumstances out of their own control find themselves out of work. It should not be something you are able to get for a substantial period of time, because like i said... McDonalds is hiring |

| You are right that beneficiaries pay tax from your tax, so it is somewhat insulting to the full time workforce when a beneficiary says they pay tax too. Lilchick is stating that she or he receives $277 per week, from Work & Incomes own site this figure is a little bit too low to be correct, if paying $200 rent per week. Additionally given that you did not say how old you are or what benefit you receive you were bound to receive a hostile reaction from the working people of NZ. Everyone pays for electricity in this country, regardless of their income source. However what no one seem's to realise is that the disconnected power bills, overdue, about to be repossessed HP payments etc is given as a loan to beneficiaries. They have to repay this money. Generally beneficiaries have to pay all these things from their weekly benefit. The benefit is intended to be a safety net. There some people who genuinly are unable to enter into the workforce, there are others who are made redundant, so need interim fincial assistance, there are those who suffer from Domestic violence. The benefit system is designed to assist & support these people during their transition. I agree that some beneficiaries see the benefit as a way of life, yes there are those that abuse the system eg by saying they are single parents, but are in fact still in a relationship, where there partner is working. There are others who have numerous children to various different people that they conveniently met at a party & have no recollection of what their name is, so child support is not able to be reclaimed to pay for their benefit. I believe it is these types of individuals that you are referring to. This is a government issue, for the government to resolve. If you want changes to take place then you need to be clear on what you are wanting changed, otherwise the government will pass it off as general whinging and nothing will change. |
