Murderers who have a previous conviction for violent crime will spend the rest of their lives in prison under a policy to be announced today by the National Party.
The "life means life" policy abolishes parole for the worst repeat violent offenders.
About 10 murderers convicted since 2002 would come into the category, it was reported today.
Party leader John Key is due to announce the parole policy, which means another prison costing more than $300 million will be needed.
Mr Key has previously promised that National would get tough on violent crime through stronger parole, bail and sentencing laws.
It is similar to the policy promoted by former party leader Don Brash before the 2005 election.
The "life means life" policy would have applied to high-profile offenders such as prison van basher George Charlie Baker, RSA triple killer William Bell and samurai sword assailant and killer Antonie Dixon, the New Zealand Herald reported. |

re the original post , sounds balanced i guess . im just glad i don't personally have to make such decisions .
so let me get it right .. if a person has been convicted of a violent crime before and done time ... and then goes on to murder .. he gets life (being 20 yrs?) or life being the remainder of his life ? |

I find it boring listerning to all these promise's from election parties, the only time I will stand up and take notice is when one says "we are going to cut back mp's salaries, take back the cars given to them, abloish mmp so the country saves on employing extra people" etc...
It would be interesting to know just how much is being wasted when they should be making an attempt to cut back costs. |
