Thanks Pands - but I don't get the herald so no my opinions are not derived from there. Cheers.
I agree wholeheartedly when you say you can't keep everyone happy all of the time, but in the same token each person has their "hot button" don't they? And Crime/Punnishment/Law/Ord er is mine. |

Its because of J Shipley that 50 percent of our prison population are there and not in a mental facility.
One of Nationals less successful policies was to close down 90 percent of mental hospitals and put them on the streets without any support whatsoever |

| the reasons for closing down the mental institutions wasnt just based on what labour or national said-its something that was happening world wide and just because people have a mental illness doesnt mean they commit more crimes! and yes that can be backed up by research. |

I agree with some of what you are saying . BUT not all the convicted murderers where released from mental hospitals,
I think maybe the government need to look at building a prison facility that includes a ward under constant lock down for the most dangerous criminals. |

| I agree with you i part Taniwha, but it is about where the government prioritise their spending. Labour class mental health awareness, and funding of facilities 2nd to bottom on the list. Alcohol and drug rehab is the bottom.... |

taniwha Just because the rest of the world were doing it doesnt mean it was the right thing to do. And it was definitly a Nats move 1st and in particular Jenny Shipley.
And with 50 percent of prisoners with some form of mental disability it shows that they are a very high proportion of crime stats |

People. We are forgetting that for any policy to be implimented it must have the majority vote in parlianment, therefore, in actualality, it is shared responsibilty.
As for lifers costing the taxpayer, as I said in an earlier posting, make the "Richard Craniums" pay their own way by working inside the prison. Prisons could become major players on the job market. Give them envelopes to stuff, anything without sharp edges but make them work for their living just as those outside have to. |

| there are plenty of people who have a mental disability who dont commit crimes-so what about the other 50 per cent?? and there are criminals who are very clever and can work the system and stay out of prison. |

| Taniwha...at the time National and Labour were putting mental patients into the community and closing residential units the U.S.A. was rebuilding and re admitting clients into facilities they closed and tore down when they discovered it did not work and caused society too many problems......How long will it take our politicians to realise that? |

| What many people in New Zealand do not seem to realise is that A&D workers are at breaking point and under resourced and undermanned and we have nowhere of real use or value to send the clients needing residential care. It is all more or less privatised now with very few public beds available. Private costs for A&D treatment is around $15,000 dollars and many are a rip off. The government needs to seriously look at the work practices of these private service providers. Some are simply making money at the expense of peoples misfortunes and are delivering substandard programs with little to no after care. That was the price we paid when Queen Mary shut down and when Annette King made the change to clients using only local facilities. I recall that when that change came in Queen Mary had a whole ward and a half idle and the North Island facilities could not cope yet North Island clients needing care could not get funding to come South to Queen Mary. |

I couldnt agree more Inbound, and i remember South Island could get funding, but the north had to pay...
It is probably one of my utmost beefs with this Govt, that they can happily collect the taxes, but there is no ambulance at the top of the cliff.
Queen Mary was the best of the best and for a supposed responsible Government to not step in and keep her going was irresponsible and in-humane. I hope you continue to do the work you do, and understand how hard it must be for you to place clients who need help in a facility.. |

Mental or not, jail is the best place for repeat offenders, not at home with a tag around the ankle. Labour have had 9 long years to fix the problem that we now have, it is to late to turn it round with catching them early, tell a kid that they will spend the rest of their life in a cell and they might think abit harder about pulling the trigger/sharpning the knife.
This will be a election winner for the Nats I think |

| If I had my way I would bring back National Service. This taught people discipline and more importantly, self discipline. It taught people to respect others and much, much more. I am ex Army and my late husband was a Vietnam Veteran and career soldier. I have a son in the army and he was an instructor for a time, with limited service volunteers. (Those that were one jump away from jail). He said they came in with a huge chip on their shoulders, bucked the system, answered back and generally caused trouble. When they all got punished for the deeds of one they suddenly learned how to work togther and when they finished their training, many wanted to join regular army and all left with heads held high and a feeling of self worth. It really works. It would solve a heck of a lot of todays problems. |

| You missed my point powely9. They are not career soldiers, they are only in for a maximun of 6 months. They train and learn life skills and job skills and discipline. It is the making of more than it breaks. |
