funny though, my mother's family are the racist dynasty, but my father was pretty progressive. he explained that people were different colours just like cows were different colours. he's still pretty old school bigot, though.
issues from my childhood? the only issue i have is why the hell was i in the dark for so long. it took me until i was at high school before i realised what the real differences between maori and pakeha were. |

i'm glad though, now that skin colour can also indicate culture. most of the bigots here are afraid of difference, and view other cultures through their own cultural-perspective filters.
i like to think we can value our differences as much as our similarities |

| i think its about ignorance and believing false information not many people know what it is really about and also it seems to be a cultural stigma in nz to oppress maori and blame them for all the bad things that all people do. its amonumental task to rise above all that i have im doing well and made a good living for myself but i know what it took. |

rpoud, i know where you're going with this statement and i agree, there is much entrenched racism out there, perhaps bigotry is more apt term, from all sections of society.
However mate, I do think the use of this example is a bit precious. ALL suspects are described by their culture or skin colour when committing violent crimes, with the exception of 'celebrities'. I have been viewed with suspicion by cultures other than my own, purely because of their preception of my skin colour and their perceptions of my 'assumed' culture. There is nothing I can do about that except ignore the offense and give them time to see who I am. If I was defensive and petulant, that reinforces the stereotype and gets me no where.
It takes time to implement change, but it can be done. Aggression isn't the way to go. |
