| Good response cammo. I never use to know anything at all about the Treaty, however I put the effort into learning more and have been greatly suprised and interested about what it really means to all of us. A clear understanding has certainly changed my views. |

| I think it was Billy T James who said that people arguing over land is a bit like a couple of fleas arguing over who owns the dog they live on. |

You talk about tribal demands for sepearte states, which is not the objective of most Maori... Yet your own posts are littered with tribalism... this isn't about living "beside" each other, it is about living "with" each other with an understand and respect of the wonderful differences we have... That is the promise of the treaty... |

It's a quote from a crocodile dundee movie... Mick dundee uses it when asked about aboriginal land rights and references it to an elder he knows...
I used it in an essay I wrote at Varsity once...
If Billy T used it too, he stole it from that movie... |

| Hey Abu I remember that now. Thanks for clarifying. I'm fairly certain I heard Billy T use it as well though. But could be wrong. Still its not a bad quote. |

prowley9...
The main word is "some" not all... harmony in NZ and equality is the only thing most of us want... but to do that we need to fix a huge mess created by our combined history... and the first challenge to us all is to understand that history... ignoring it is a very dangerous choice... Why do Maori fail at school? why are there more of them in prison then any other race? why do we top bad health stats? yet we know Maori (in the right environment) can achieve, we know Maori were hugely successful in the 1850s while the rest of NZ struggled in a depression... why?
If this nation is to get anywhere, it needs to understand these questions... and you as a member of this society have a choice to either be part of that understanding, and therefore the solution, or be part of the problem... Do you really want to be part of the problem???? |

It's a great quote I use it alot... got a A- for that essay, should have been an A at least, but that reference was questioned and marked down... bloody lecturers have no sense of fun some times... |

| Lecturers can be a bit serious! I enjoy a good laugh thats why I think its fun when someone like Powley throws in a few smart remarks on these posts. Well done on your A- (still an excellent grade). |

this is the problem promley...
The treaty of waitangi, and the history around it are not just about a piece of paper signed in 1840, or is about the payouts of the Waitangi Tribunal... there is a matrix of history and signifcant moments where Moari were set up to fail, and now that they have they are blamed for it...
You need to look beyond the media hype, the payouts, and pakeha backlash, look beyond the obvious anger on both sides, and look at the facts dispassionately... look at the laws that outlawed Traditional Maori Practices, look at the discrimination in our history for returned soldiers and land owners... look at an Education system that does not work for a Maori world view... all these are wrapped up in that history... |
