| I'm not from here (I come from a country where the people are responsible for themselves and have the right to defend themselves, their families and possessions). Within month of my arrival I made it a point to read "THE TREATY" (english and "Maori"-in english). My feeling is that an awwwwfull amount of subjective self serving interpretation has been done. Being an avid reader - I find the language relativly straightforward and easy to understand - even easier than the US Constitution in many ways. Most of the atrocities being committed today in the name of the treaty were not part of it and I don't think that either "side" could approve if they were honest. To everyone I say READ IT!!!! or don't feel you can comment on it or today's problems. It is a shame that so much effort and money is being spent to preserve a society that has no relevance today other than to be able to claim the highest rates of; alcoholism, drug abuse, child abuse, wife beating, suicide, crime, unemployment, obesity, diabetes, teenage pregnancy, incarceration etc. and the lowest rates of education, acheivement, business ownership, individual property ownership etc. In other words every known criteria by which society is judged - the Maori society fails at miserably. Why have the productive members of society already contributed so much to preserve that which is actually a harmful burden on civilization? What have the past contributions been so ineffectivly spent on? Shouldn't any future "cotributions" be eliminated or at the least be spent differently? Why preserve that which is harmful to itself and others? The Maori society could not survive on it's own in today's world - it relies on the forced "contributions" of a successful civilization. Had the English applied Maori practices to the Maori (subjegation, enslavement, cannibalism and winner take all) - it would have been a longer war - but within 10-20 or even 30 years it would have been over and their society would have ended. |

Kia ora
I know snippets about the treaty and think its wonderful piece of history when interpereted right, who's right though!
Being part maori and not brought up with it makes it difficult.
I also agree that it should be taught in schools from the age of 5yrs, a basic understanding of aotearoa cannot be a negative, its history! |

contactmarkb - You pretty much summed up the Maori culture as...
"subjegation, enslavement, cannibalism and winner take all"
What a load of b/s. There are a few books that I think you should read to get a better insight as to what the Maori culture is REALLY about.
Te Ao Hurihuri - Michael King
Ka whawhai tonu matou - Ranginui Walker
Story of a Treaty - Claudia Orange
"...I say READ IT!!!! or don't feel you can comment on it..."
I'm sure it won't take you that long as you're an "avid reader". |

Wow contactmarkb...you must have read a very SHORT book on Maori..The silly thing is that you right to a point...DID you read where it says there are not many TRUEBLUE Maori left in NEW ZEALAND due to the fact the Maori blood has been watered down by all the other RACES...
Is your statistics also in the same book ? Because if you really think about it there are not that many Maori.....so
if you are going to do a poll on anything would you not choose a lower amount of people so you come to a conclusion quicker...Had the English kept their PRISONERS in England rather than send them down under, Maori would have been a lot better of....You should have put the I'M NOT FROM HERE IN Capital letters.....If things piss you off so bad well GO BACK TO WHENCE YOU CAME...... |

Well for one I didn't sign it.
Some tribes who did not sign have had Treaty Claims paid out.
Argue the Treaty in Victorian values - not in todays terms.
Also, isnt it better the British came and offered a Treaty.
Just think on the fact that the French, Spain or Dutch would not have been so considerate! |

Quote!! can you define responsibility's, defence, families and possessions??? please, so what are you trying to say?!!! why are you living here?? There is absolutley no sujective self-serving interpretation of any such thing with the TREATY!! the history is told exactly how it happenned they the english came here (POMES!!(prisoner of mother england & bought there stinking disceases) injected it into the humble MAORI.. and the Yanks an the rest of the foreigners why don't you all piss off, We us KIWI"S don't need bad breaders like you in our counrty infesting it with corruption and deceit; Just go away: let us kiwi's eat fresh food and plenty kaimoana like old times instead of all the best food is exported and we are made to eat *** !! (The Dregs so to speak))so you mr whoever i would appreciate it if you left MAORI Treaty out of it... Here us MAORI are trying to clean up our act and cynical beings like you are always going to undermind it.. |

| juney - I'm not intending this to be personal, you have your view and I mine, I commend you for having your stance on which government you want, as I have my own. But I do feel the need to point out, that it is not knowledge itself that is required to rule...but numbers...ie votes...make yours count. |
