Hi There up2ow...This is the preamble part of the Treaty of Waitangi......

Preamble
HER MAJESTY VICTORIA Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland regarding with Her Royal favour the Native Chiefs and Tribes of New Zealand and anxious to protect their just Rights and Property and to secure to them the enjoyment of Peace and Good Order has deemed it necessary in consequence of the great number of Her Majesty's Subjects who have already settled in New Zealand and the rapid extension of Emigration both from Europe and Australia which is still in progress to constitute and appoint a functionary properly authorised to treat with the Aborigines of New Zealand for the recognition of Her Majesty's Sovereign authority over the whole or any part of those islands - Her Majesty therefore being desirous to establish a settled form of Civil Government with a view to avert the evil consequences which must result from the absence of the necessary Laws and Institutions alike to the native population and to Her subjects has been graciously pleased to empower and to authorise me William Hobson a Captain in Her Majesty's Royal Navy Consul and Lieutenant Governor of such parts of New Zealand as may be or hereafter shall be ceded to her Majesty to invite the confederated and independent Chiefs of New Zealand to concur in the following Articles and Conditions.

And NO Maori did not have it in School....Anyway they were not allowed to SPEAK their own Language, but had to adopt the English Language thats just a start...Yes i agree it should be taught or made compulsory as it is part of N.Z history

The Treaty would work if both sides were genuine about righting the wrongs of the past but as long as Tony Veitch can have people sticking up for him after what he's done...I'm not holding my breath... I think someone mentioned mana at one point... I wonder

And you call yourself an avid reader?? I don't want to come in here and disresepct anyone at all, but you have really riled me up with your interpretation of where things might be without this "successful civilisation". Do yourself a favour and read ALL the history so you can get a real feel of what went down. Yes, we Maori are gold medlists for evertyhing bad. So why? Because of a number of things that began with colonisation. Yes, go back and READ. You'll see some surprising facts. We wlcomed the colonials into our country. The only reason a treaty was put together was because Maori were sick and tired of the lawlessness of the visitors and decided to petition the british goverment to sort their people out. I'm not going to attempt to gloss over the fact that Maori warred from time to time and had some practices that would definitely be frowned upon today - but so did every other culture. We need to look back in order to go forward. We need to understand what happened in the past to better assess a way into the future. All these things you say Maori fail in? These are all symptoms of what happened in the past. Its not an excuse, its an acknowledgement. Its a reason. Go and READ properly this time!

Re:How much do you know about the Treaty ... Reply to this message
YES GLOBE!!!! THE LAWLESS PAKEHA!!!!!

They had to sent people to come over and sort them out! Maori signed the treaty thinking that the Pakeha were just going to govern their own people which was cool with them because they were sick of the drunken, lawless Pakeha.

PS I am also of Pakeha so I'm not just hating. It's fact.

The hand outs referred to are the ones you can only get if your Maori.... and thats the truth, i have three kiddies and one can get more than the other two.. FACT!. because of that we dont allow the oldest to take scholarships because she is Maori, she is no less disadvantaged as my other two children, but the Goverment and media will tell you she is.. poor people are poor regardless of race.. give it to the little girl that waits whatever her colour

I a curious if your children were offered scholarships based upon gender would you accept them? or if they were offered a scholarship based upon geography (where they live)??? Scholarships always have requirements attached to them, and they are designed to target particular people because there is a specific need for that type of person within a field or particular kind of work. The reality is that Maori are under represented in professional areas where statistically they are badly achieving such as education and health... Maori scholarships in this area are designed to increase the number of Maori working in these areas, which will help Maori as a whole achieve greater results in these areas...

I am also curious, are you also suggesting no scolarships are better then scholarships which are allocated based upon a particular socio-defined target group??? because if that is the case there would be very few scholarships at all.

i bet if you did a survey of all new zealanders the majority couldnt give a toss and are sick and tired of having this rammed down our throats continuously.we are all one people, the sooner we move on ,the better for all ,and this proud nation of kiwis.bring on the republic, ditch the treaty altogether and unite as a country.
