When the white settlers arrived. The dominant Maori tribe was the Ngai-Tahu who had displaced the Ngati-Mamoe who had in their turn, overrun the Waitaka. This was about 1550 but there were others before them. Recent carbon dating shows that the earliest moa hunters were here about 950 A.D. and some suggest dates much earlier than this. Few tribe could settle and be sure of permanence. This last wave of invaders were the pakeha. By this time attrition had decimated the indigenous population – Te Rauparaha and disease completed the task.

KInda curious which tribe did best in battle and what they looked like. Which was better small and speedy or big and slow? You would think when weapons were involved speedy would be good if it was sharp. But with something like the taiaha strength would be good also. Plus the bigger people could never catch the smaller people, which would be needed when all you had was hand to hand combat.

Vry

Maori population in the Sth Is was 1884 when the pinkskins had a first count up.

Within months of their arrival it was even less because of the disease they caught from them.

but hey, we`ve really bounced back now as a force to be reckoned with.
Dont you just love that
