On a more positive note:
Three year 13 Otumoetai students are determined to finish school, gain university entrance and not become another statistic. The three girls will all be the first in their families to attend university. A milestone achievement for the girls but a sad reflection on Maori academic achievements.

Just 63% of Maori men and 67% of Maori women leave school with NCEA Level one which is still 20 points fewer than Pakeha. The number of Maori students qualified to attend University rose from 14,162 in 2002 to 22,084 in 2007 or from 27% to 39%. However, rentention rates for Maori secondary students are improving and more University graduates are continuing on to post-graduate study.

Good news eh??

not necessarily tewhi those hospital and education board lands being retained for future schools and hospitals given to maori re settlements are not the only land available for these facities. privately owned land can be acquired for these purposes.

Kia Ora dds, how are you today? Yes I posted that from todays Bay of Plenty times because these are students that are a part of a mentoring programme I'm involved with. Will be fantastic to see alot more Moari students from Tauranga finish school and then graduate from Uni. :-))

Re:Maori activists on the warpath Reply to this message
Wrong, the guns were bought from autralia by the Maori Chief that went to england to first write the Maori language. England refused him muskets and gave him gifts. On the way back to nz he sold all his gifts in aussie and bought guns. Then went back to his warlike ways in NZ. He also took back a mirror. He used to show it to enemies and tell them he'd captured their mana :)
Ok I really gotta go now. Aint nothing but biased Maori versions of everything here.

vrybored: I always imagined you never had anything very interesting to say. Actually, you're pretty good when you get on a role, keep posting, I'm listening haha lol!

Re:Maori activists on the warpath Reply to this message
There would be unity between races if Maori would stop seperating themselves from everyone else. Why do you need special healthcare? Special this special that, and and your own jails even wtf? You're all just a bunch of special fkrs aren't you :)

Vrybored: YOu walk a fine line my friend. Agree to disagree with the things about Maoridom that you don't like. But don't resort to name calling, we are not all bad you know. People like you really grate me vrybored. Don't be such a sore loser eh??

tewh < there is plenty of facility for young urban Maori to register for their slice of the pie. >

That is true, however evidence might suggest exercising these facilities is more often motivated by self interest than any ideaology of reciprocity or in any context of social capital which might otherwise be expected from Maori society.

siwebb... totally agree with you. It absolutely could have happened .... However, the Legislators changed the game plan and it had more to do with the divide and rule system they prefer. This is what Maori have to work with and I see that different tribal entities are finally getting their act together.

The Tribal Fisheries Groups are doing just what you suggested with their shares. It has taken awhile, progress is steadily on the improve by way of almalgamation with different groups who see the greater picture. Their focus is on the world markets. Its a bout supply and demand.

It is difficult to get one tribal group to agree let alone a group of tribes. Believe me its quite frustrating being Maori sometimes, dealing with those who cannot see the bigger picture.

Of course 100 years from now it wont matter much for you and I as the whole world scene will have changed dramatically.

Finally, on the matter of guns that was one person who went to Australia and bought the guns.
There were white dealers who saw the opportunity to provide guns to Maori Chiefs in exchange for land to further fuel inter-tribal wars on a greater scale.

Inanga,
you are possibly correct
what I was trying to do was give Vry some direction & maybe counter the mindset he/she is carrying.

I really cant work out where he/she is sitting or even what he/she wants to achieve.
he/she doesnt appear to want to acknowledge anything to do with Maori, let alone learn from my suggestions.

No accounting for or changing some attitudes tewh.
The best endorsements are challenges run afoul.

Maybe Vrys' brain has travelled into the future and forgotten all the common sense it has yet to develop.

Re:Maori activists on the warpath Reply to this message
no tewhi it was a reaction to your blatantly arrogant statement regarding maori renting back to the govt settlement lands for schools and hospitals. it wasn't the content of what you said, it was the way that you said it. not very endearing tewhi. i sold some land to the govt for a school 2 years ago. so maori aren't the only ones with landholdings in nz tewhi. the land i sold for a school belonged to me. one owner not 40,000 to share the profits. your arrogance tewhi is uncalled for. remember, total settlements equate approx. to 4 billion to be shared amongst 600,000 maori. i remind you that nz's wealthiest man, graeme hart is worth that much all on is own. believe it or not tewhi, but the maori settlements is not the biggest most important news in the land, there are some far bigger rods in the fire.

It won't be shared amongst 600k maori, be lucky if even 100k get any. They only care about their own iwi, not other Maori.
