The Power of One is a Bryce Courtenay book. Try reading some of the others if you thought that was good. Potato Factory good place to start.

Gary Bills, that sounds really interesting! What part of Africa are you going to? I once watched a doco where a NZ couple set up a motel in Africa and bought the rights to sell Coca Cola. They made more money from their coke contract unfortunately.

Can I ask, how do you imagine that you will distribute money back into the African community? Just interested!

Gary: Are you a humanatarian in Africa? Yeah, we must sound whiney eh! The only horrible things I really have witnessed is the stuff I see on the Discovery Channel. I'd love to do humanitarian work instead of chasing the dollar or the dream of the dollar. I know crimes against humanity exist but it all seems too surreal, when you see the cases of human resillience in Africa its hard to put yourself into that situation.

Re:Maori activists on the warpath Reply to this message
hine, when they say it only costs a dollar a day, they mean it,One of the main things will be creating employment, but other things like small scale irrigation, helping with rent to buy small scale minning operations, using modern tecnology, the only minning equipment they have is les than what the chinnese had in nz 150 years ago,its like they say,Give a man a fish, and he will feed his family for a day,Give him the means to catch the fish, and he will feed his family forever

Re:Maori activists on the warpath Reply to this message
How will gold mining help the Africans? I will openly admit my only knowledge of the industry is what I've seen on Blood Diamond and that was all about political corruptness and the child armies. I have a gut feeling that you by no means indorse such corruption but do you really think the Africans have the business acumen to deal in gold mining and trading? Will it really benefit their community or just line the pockets of a few and cause the villagers to fight? Sorry Gary, nosy ay haha lol!

Re:Maori activists on the warpath Reply to this message
I agree with you on humanitarians. For a whole year I contributed $44.00 to a charity to sponsor a starving child in Kenya. Then I became suspicious because I couldn't find much information on the company. So I stopped paying, but they really had me going, sent me a letter every month and photo's. So corrupt to be benefiting from others miserable situations.

Re:Maori activists on the warpath Reply to this message
No hine, corruption exists everywhere, but not as rife in Tanzania as in other places, its actually quite amazing how educated alot of the people over there are,i think given half a chance, africa could rule the world, you only have to see what happens when they get sponsored to go to the us or the uk for an eduction, they end up as a top brain surgeon or the likes, its not so much corruption, but cue jumping monie,100 us dollars gets your papers stamped then and there, otherwise you have to wait months, its no different here,if you pay for private health, you get your operation tommorro,if not,you go on the waiting list

out in the middle of nowhere, its a whole different story,we have to deal with the local kajeje(kuamatuas)and the first thing they ask for is jobs for the local tribe(iwi)thats when the dollar a day really does make a difference

Re:Maori activists on the warpath Reply to this message
Gary, I think a persons success is related to what ever is driving them. For the Africans on scholarships they know very well if they don't make it then they return to a live of poverty in a third world country. The human mind and strength is amazing, I sometimes wish I could harness such pure drive but I'm a lazy cow, raised in a sedentary lifestyle where I've not had to over exert myself too far to achieve my goals.

Oprah Winfrey opened a school for girls in Johannesburg and some of those students came from the most impoverished backgrounds and have huge aspirations to be politicians and teachers. They will succeed because they know what they have to lose.

Ah yeah gary, the exuberance of youth!! I get my daily workout at the gym but I also make sure my son gets to all his extra cirriculum activities. He'll never be a rugby player but he's amazingly creative at song and dance and is quite the intellect too. Aspires to be a scientist inventor so I'm happy lol!
