RIP Kashin Reply to this message
Let us know your memories of Kashin, Auckland Zoo's 40-year-old elephant, who died yesterday...

I remember installing pumps in Kashins enclosure. It was awesome having an elephant standing watching me work.

Re:RIP Kashin Reply to this message
My great grandmother used to live behind the Zoo, so we used to go there quite a bit when I was little. (Along with numerous School Trips etc.) I remember going to see Kashin, and her mate Mashwie in that horrible old Elephant House. Thankfully, the zoo have long since moved on from that one.

Kashin was a much loved part of Auckland Zoo, and she'll be sadly missed by humans and animals alike.

RIP Kashin. :"(

Here's a chance for packedinacaketin to move up the food chain. You could park the holden in Kashins' old cage too, Pal.

Re:RIP Kashin Reply to this message
I remember seeing Kashin and Paladin interacting once.
It was delightful.
Kashin went charging through the baboon enclosure and knocked down Paladins' lean-to. Paladin just got up, scratched the place where his balls used to be and pretended nothing had happened.
Later Paladin climbed the tree near Kashins' enclosure and started scratching Kashins' back, even though Kashin had caused the total structural failure of his sanctuary.
Paladin didn't even bat an eyelid either, when Kashin took a dump in Paladins' yard, causing the loss of Paladins' liberty, while the staff cleaned up the mess. He is such a meek baboon, who enjoys a good reaming, he will no doubt miss Kashin dearly.

Ummmm...it was an incarcerated pachyderm and it has died...so what?

Good grief...memories?...proba bly an awful smell...runny eyes...defeated attitude...just another imprisoned animal to be used as amusement for parents to take bored kids out for the day...

Bet the old beast is thrilled it is finally free and not being gawked at by a bunch of losers...

Re:RIP Kashin Reply to this message
I remember taking my grumpy mother in law to the zoo while she was in Auckland for the first time, we were standing at the fence of the enclosure watching the keeper hosing Kashin down and out of the blue Kashin turned and sprayed my mother in law from head to toe.! It was the funniest thing I have ever seen, it took all my might to keep a straight face.!!!
RIP Kashin and thanks for that.! :)

Re:RIP Kashin Reply to this message
yes rip Kashin, in a park out towards killburnie there is an elephant buried there that died while in a circus many years ago, I am sure they will have a site for the beloved Kashin. I have only seen the elephants once at Auckland zoo, and it is amazing how quietly they walk around the pavements, I can remember patting their trunks, a sad day indeed, but dear Kashin in not suffering any longer.

Re:RIP Kashin Reply to this message
Chris - zoos are hideous and should be closed...my view...outdated places that to me have on show the saddest examples of the animals they represent...

Never once took my kids to the awful things...grew up in Africa...if you want to see animals, go there...take your kids...

not everyone has the finances etc to go to africa, and not only that, there is a place in all zoos to see endangered species, so yes a zoo is the rite place to see these animals

Re:RIP Kashin Reply to this message
Fabulous countrygal - let's pop to the zoo and see some caged Tiger...the most fantastic of all the cats...lying in some tiny enclosure...we can point and say "look Sebastian..." as the snotty little thing licks an icecream???

No thanks.

Cant make it to Africa or Asia?

Then buy a book and read that at bed time...
