That's a poor excuse for bad behaviour, Taniwha40. Christ! I was brought up in the Great Depression, but you don't see me going around stealing food.

Re:kururiki scum Reply to this message
old_wolseley I don't think anyone is saying that is an excuse for his bad behaviour. There is a huge difference for excusing attributions than seeking a cause.
What is done cannot be undone but we must look to what causes people like kurariki into these situations. Whatever his parents, and he had some, did or did not do are important. But now too late.
Also as I have stated from 14 to 21 yrs of age he has been in prisons. IMO he is already on a journey of destruction one that will not only involve himself but many others he comes across.
he was given a title all those years ago and now he will live up to that.

Re:kururiki scum Reply to this message
Mike I agree - he is nothing more than a product of the prison environment. A sad waste of a young life. Hard to know what would have been a better place for him tho.
This country has it all so backwards - we've known for a long time now that the first 3 years of life are the most important for brain development, get them right in a good part of the population and you will see a pretty big drop in crime rates later on. Holland is the best example of this where they have been pouring money into early childhood for the best part of the last 20 - 25 years and now they are in the process of closing prisions because they can no longer fill them. Here in NZ there is far more financial emphasis on adolescent programs which often do not work, would be completely unnecessary if support, education and care of 0 - 3 year olds were a priority. If this had been the case the likes of Kururiki would far more likely be a functional contributing member of the communtiy.

Re:kururiki scum Reply to this message
nivah and mike are spot on. there is little hope of turning an antisocial adolescent around, and these programmes are an ambulance at the bottom of the cliff. while there are some good, effective programmes around which should be supported, earlier intervention is always going to be more effective.

young people exhibit the same antisocial behaviours as preschoolers that they are arrested for in their teens. clearly it would be better to support programmes to target the younger age groups.

in regard to mr kurariki, there was never any hope for a successful intervention as a part of the prison system, and the public would never have accepted his removal from it. a sad waste of a young life indeed

Maybe so, but 'right in good part of the population' is a lottery when the qualification for domestic purposes beneficiaries is little more than having a child. In fact it appears the further towards wrong and bad the greater the benefit.

Re:kururiki scum Reply to this message
inanga sure we have children having children and it is a hu8ge issue in terms of social cost. But we need a greater emphasis placed on these folks.Taking children away from mothers is a last step thank goodness and i am all for family/whanau involvement.
I truly believe most folk have the totally wrong perception of our poorer folk. Not all are bad, for want of a better word. There are thousands of stars out there that haven't and wont be given the opportunity to shine.
The greatest asset anyone can have is an education we should focus all our attention on trying to get this right.
For example I find it abhorrent that the lower decile schools get the LEAST resources. It makes no reasoning to me.

Re:kururiki scum Reply to this message
Why oh why Taniwha40 do people always want justify the way they turn to crime on their upbringing (or lack of it). I never had a great upbringing either but I have never resorted to criminal activity. People need to be responsible for their own b****y actions. Everyone has an excuse, what a cop out!

Lock a fourteen year old boy up for six years in a third world prison system and then expect him to emerge as a reformed character.? Sheer delusion.

jandp, you say you didn't have a great upbringing. was your upbringing a criminal one, where your family and other role models lived criminal lifestyles? this is the kind of upbringing that breeds young offenders. they have a different understanding of right and wrong, and messed up values systems

Re:kururiki scum Reply to this message
he is scum and needs putting down! its a cop out blaming it all on your upbringing. Yes you may live in a bad enviroment but that doesnt mean that you have to follow that. You have decisions in life and i know many that have been born to gang families and got out to be an upstanding member of society. Theres no reason nowadays to steal or commit crime as everything seems to be given to them on a plate! Its a bad excuse and very easy blaming everyone else for your own misgivings and not taking responsibility!
